Britain's main weakness in this area was it's dependence on imported raw materials, which could be subjected to interdiction (Germany also suffered in this regard, even more severely than Britain when we talk about trade over the seas, due to the vulnerability of it's ports to blockade at placed like the straits of Dover -- however, it must be remembered that Germany could trade safely with the Soviet Union, at least prior to hostilities with them).
