The Yank government tried that during the Prohibition already, we all know how that ended up.

Still, most Islamic nations have prohibition of alcohol in their laws, and most also seem reasonably dry. Must be a cultural thing.

In the Western world, every legendary tough guy is seen around with a drink, be it James Bond with his unshaken vodka & martini, or Clint Eastwood's cowboy heroes with their glass of whiskey. Seductive women always ask these tough heroes to buy them a drink first.
The way to stop alcohol consumption is not through bans, but through change of paradigms. What if a generation of young people grew up with popular heroes that didn't drink, that they were implanted with the idea that real tough guys who get the hottest girls don't drink?

This certainly seems to have worked in Islamic societies, where the adoptation of Islam brought this change of paradigms. It certainly didn't happen in one day or a year, but over a generation or more, until drinking booze was no longer seen as cool and looked down upon as a sinful act.

Personally, though, I like things just the way they are.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

The more God in one's mouth, the less in one's heart.

Considering all you need to make it is to let some maple syrup (if you want rum) sit too long, I'd say that's pretty impossible to regulate.

I mean, yes and no. Yes, alcohol is illegal to buy in certain countries (like Saudi Arabia) but if you go to a high-class party there and it's in private, there will be alcohol there. In countries like Morocco, alcohol is even easier to find because although its majority Muslim, alcohol is legal and sold in supermarkets.

So even in Muslim societies, where alcohol is very frowned upon, alcohol is impossible to regulate. What makes anyone think they can regulate it in a 'Western' country?

I'd be home brewing too during those days if that meant being successfully self-employed during an economically troubling time.

I'll end up doing it in a few hours. I was only on the fence about it, but when a prohibitionist comes along it gives me cravings. That must be why alcohol consumption increased so much when it was banned.

Anyone who thinks alcohol should be illegal should go read up on prohibition, Al Capone and speakeasys. Then they should go slap themselves for making such a stupid suggestion. Alcohol must remain legal, if you don't want to drink it JUST DON'T BUY IT! Obviously there have to be regulations on not being drunk while your driving or working and also as a woman if you are pregnant (so as to avoid giving your unborn baby foetal alcohol syndrome).
"I find that offensive" is never a sound counter argument.
"Men in general are quick to believe that which they wish to be true." - Gaius Julius Caesar
"I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it's for or against." - Malcolm X
"The soul of a nation can be seen in the way it treats its children" - Nelson Mandela
The wealth of humanity should be determined by that of the poorest individual.

"What makes a man

Strength enough to build a home
Time enough to hold a child
and Love enough to break a heart".

Terry Pratchett

Since God hath ordained that alcohol is sinful, the United Nations should ban the production, sale, possession, and consumption of alcohol and enforce and punish it with roving death squads.
