Any thoughts on compulsory vaccinations? Not sure if it would be enforceable or if courts would strike it down, but it might be a good idea.

OP Article wrote:An estimated 84 percent of toddlers in the U.S. have received their complete course of vaccination. However, only 8 percent of adults are currently vaccinated.

That's not a story of anti-vaxers putting others at risk by refusing to vaccinate their own kids. It's a story of kids too young to be vaccinated yet contracting pertussis from adults and older kids. If 8% of adults are vaccinated, that can't be put down only to anti-vaxer scaremongering.

There just aren't that many anti-vaxers. This shows that among parents of small children, anti-vaxxers are only 14%. That's still disturbing of course, but it is NOT enough to account for the low rate of adult vaccination.

The CDC recommends vaccination with Tdap in early adulthood if the booster vaccination at 11 to 12 years old was missed. Interestingly, the boosters once every ten years for adults don't include pertussis, so maybe "only 8% of adults are currently vaccinated" is a bit of a red herring.

Infants aren't vaccinated against pertussis until 15 months. The OP article says 2 years.

There might be some other explanation for older kids not getting vaccinated, other than their parents being anti-vaxers. I presume it's free and convenient to get? Schools are making 11 and 12 year olds aware that they need boosters aren't they? Perhaps it's simply a matter of older kids refusing ... not because they think "it might give me autism" but just because injections hurt! And parents not exercising authority effectively enough to make them do it.

I mean by the time there is an epidemic, it's too late for vacinnation to affect the epidemic. In response to Luveria.

I suppose an epidemic would change people's minds, but then there'd be less reason to make vacinnation compulsory.

No, but it prevents it, which is arguably grounds for compulsory vaccination, but the problem then is lawsuits if there are side-effects.

What about mandatory vaccinations for contagious diseases, with an exception for those with allergies to the relevant vaccine?

Perhaps we could pay parents money to vaccinate? Strongly encourage (as now) and also some money.

It's not about the money for them. It's how because they listen to too much Alex Jones, they genuinely believe vaccination is a conspiracy designed to cause their children autism. I don't see money helping.

This is a self-reporting survey, so it's less reliable than the 2007 figures. Still shows about 14% of parents refusing to vaccinate.

Say every parent (or parenting couple) got $1000 for vacinnating their child. With about 4 million babies born a year, that's $4 billion. If that persuaded one quarter of the current refusers to vaccinate their baby, that comes to about $28 thousand for each additional vaccination (half that if refusal rate went down by half). It seems a bit much, but giving parents of 2 to 4 year old children a thousand bucks each isn't exactly a waste of money.

It may seem cynical, but I find that a lot of decisions made "on principle" turn out to be susceptible to a cash bribe.

The figures would suddenly shoot up from how there's a spontaneous wave of parents who now need to be bribed to vaccinate their children, when before the payments they would have done it anyway.

You'll notice that I budgeted for every parent. The parents don't have to make some show of "considering" not vaccinating in order to get it.

For the booster shots at 11 or 12 years of age, it might make more sense to give a payment to the child themselves. If the parents don't allow that, put it in a trust fund for the child to use when they become adult. Children being generally poor (in terms of money THEY choose how to spend) it could be a smaller payment and still positively affect their consent to booster vaccinations.

Seriously people just force parents to vaccinate their children by virtue of making vaccination a requirement for stuff. Like for example one or more of the following: employment in the public sector or the military industrial complex, staying in an university campus, not getting executed on sight by the police...

That should do it.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

Yes, I noticed that in the story too. It's not clear whether all the children (who died) were vaccinated or not.

In any case, Pertussis isn't vaccinated against at birth. Unvaccinated adults (and older children) pose a risk to them before vaccination.
