Well, I should have corrected myself, she found two that were religious, and apparently she was bitching that there used to be more, but now there isn't. It's just one of those thing you have to :palm: .

Yep, I have a feeling the first thing these people will do to help the free-market will be establishing quotas and regulations on greeting card companies to make religious chistian-centric Christmas Cards...

The irony stings...

It would sting if it were true.

And people can't bitch about a store not selling as many or anything?

I know how stores work and why they may stop lines, doesn't mean I have to be happy when they stop selling my brand of Tomato paste.

There is nothing wrong with celebrating Christmas. I'm an Agnostic. I still celebrate it. People say,"Well, thats out of line. You can't celebrate Christmas if your not Christian!"
So, what? I can celebrate what ever I want! Its my choice! Christmas today is so secular, that it doesn't matter if your an Atheist and you celebrate it. Its tradition.
And Yes. Church and State should be separate. But to go as far as to complain that "Theres a Nativity scene in front of Town Hall. They should take that down! Its against my beliefs!" is really pushing it. The City Government isn't enforcing any ideals on anyone. There just putting up decorations for the Holidays. If these Decorations say ,"The Non Christians must DIE!" then we have a problem. Main point is, people are making a big fuss over a piece of wood that shaped like a Nativity scene. Its not going to become alive and go on a town-wide killing spree, is it? Its just a symbol. Stop complaining.
Hey, if your Atheist, string up some Lights that spell out,"There is no God".
If your Jewish, sport that Star of David
Hey, I might even put up a light up Question Mark!(because i'm Agnostic, if you forgot)

Yes, they are. By virtue of the blatantly religious scene, they are. A menorah would be the same thing, but with a different religion.

Being blatantly religious isn't actually the problem - being the only (blatantly) religious display is effectively endorsing one choice. If they were equally representative of any (every?) other option, there'd be no problem - but that way lies madness.

The United States government is not supposed to endorse religion over no religion, no religion over religion, or one religion over another religion. It's supposed to stay out of the religion business entirely. Having displays for all of them is just as much a problem has having displays for only one.

Oh, I dunno. Having displays for 5 *randomly* selected religions that change every now and then would be fine by me.

Meh, only ones around here, surprisingly enough, that place nativity scenes out are Churches...

Wilgrove wrote:Will we see a War on Christmas this year? We actually didn't see one last year, at least I didn't. I guess the economic turmoil got people more concern with their jobs, house, and money than whenever or not someone is saying Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. However, with the Republican Party going further right (and into obscurity), will they raise a stink about this?

I'm surprise they aren't already bitching about The GAP new ad, which basically mentions all the winter holiday (including Solstice), but the Holiday Season has just begun, so we will see.

Of course I'll be the heathen that'll be wishing everyone a Happy Holiday!

I dont say "Happy Holidays" I say "Merry Christmas" because that is the Holiday I am celebrating...being lucky enough to have lived around large numbers of hindus, Jews, and Muslims however I dont get offended by someone wishing me a "pleasant-X" whatever that "X" may be. I mean if a person is trying to be nice what kind of douche would I have to be to be all like "Fuck you, keep your well wishes." I can just as easily respond "and to you" if wished a Happy Chanakuh, Ramadan(it isnt right now I know), Solstice, Yule, Asslick Day, whatever as I can respond "and to you" to a Merry/Happy Christmas. So if your particular brand of Paganism is celebrating a holiday right now--feck 'em wish people a happy -whatever YOU are celebrating. If they dont like it then they are shit bags who would rather the world stay in a perpetual bad mood.
It like when I say "GOd Bless you" to someone who then responds " Oh, I didnt sneeze" to which I then respond "Ok, I take it back. I hope you fall down."

Being kind and courteous and trying to include our fellow men/women in our celebrations and joy shouldnt be met with so much fecking resistance.

A city town hall isnt the United States Government--if the City Charter has no provision for being neutral with regards to religion then they have not the obligation you speak.

Last year, I had some fun wishing people a Happy Hannukah and seeing how they reacted; most people looked at me funny, but no one said anything about it to me. Hey, it's been around for a lot longer than Christmas has!

It won't be as fun this year, though. Last year, it passed over Christmas, but this year it ends on the 19th (and next year it's going to be from the first of December to the ninth). Isn't gonna stop me, though.

The question I really mean however are local governments covered under the 14th amendment?

I've never believed in this so-called "War on Christmas" and always thought of it as newspeak for "hey, the government is finally getting around to enacting separation of church and state." It's unconstitutional for the government to be endorsing what some people refer to as a Christian holiday.

If anything, I'd say that Christmas is becoming more and more shoved in our faces. The malls around here are already blasting crappy Christmas music, the neighbors already have their lights up, and there's always a plethora of Christmas specials on television each year.
