Thanks, guys. Somehow I've managed to find myself in this thing the last 4 years or so. Particularly surprising this year, since, frankly, the quality of my posts is directly related to my interest in the site, and to say that said interest has wained would be..somewhat understating things. I think my reputation here is based less on new developments and more of resting on my laurels. "Bob the Janitor", "Alice Bob and Carol" and my full faith and credit post still make their way around here now and then, as does a few more of my better posts, but it's fair to say that I've not really said anything particularly meaningful, insightful, or really all that valueable in months, if not a year or more.

Which makes this year a bit more impactful than the previous, since it'll probably be my last. I don't believe in "goodbye" posts, and have no intention of making one now, but it's a pretty simple fact, my activity is petering off to non-existence. For a few reasons, really. First, kinda busy getting my own place up off the ground (worst kept secret I'm sure, I've had it in my signature for a month) but beyond that, the forum that existed when I was more frequent, when I was more active, when my posts were more worthwhile...is gone. At a certain point, this became less about "community" and more about "profit". At a certain point, somebody realized that while forum trolls make for a toxic community, they make for good ad revenue. And that was the point where this became a community of the lowest common denominator. That was the point where trolling, puppeting, and general degredation of the community at large not only because allowable, but actively encouraged. After all, a 5 page thread containing an interesting discussion about the Syrian situation doesn't bring in NEARLY enough ad revenue as a 50 page thread talking about how raghead and fags should be shot. The minute this site started generating ad revenue is the minute that it became a place that encourages toxicitiy in the community for the sake of a buck.

And while I didn't want to believe it, the nonsensical "trollnaming" rule only led further to that conclusion. Any pretense about being a place that valued community went out the window the minute it became forbidden to actually discourage trolling. At that point, not only was trolling essentially a non actionable offense, but the Powers that Be went through profound effort not only to encourage it, but actively defend it.

But all of that I could forgive, all of that i could look past, all of that I could ignore for the rare diamond in the rough, but for a single thing. Every time I look at the place, every time I think about logging in, every time I think about making a post, I'm reminding of one single fact. Moderation staff protected a child molestor. Moderation staff was made aware of an admitted child rapist posting on this forum, and chose to do nothing. For 6 months.

And then, they allowed him back.

And every time I feel like saying something, every time I feel inspiration, every time I get that itching in my fingertips to type out something clever, I just remember "by going to this site, you, and everyone who reads this post you're about to write, will be providing ad revenue to an entity that allowed a child rapist to operate near children" and my inspiration fades. My desire dampens. My willingness to continue, through my efforts, to allow profit through endangering children...I just can't do it.

I love NSG. I made great friends here. Spent hours of my existence here. Met the love of my life here. This has always been a special place for me. And as much as I may appear sarcastic, sardonic, and rude, I'm truly touched that my occassional scrawlings have managed, inexplicably, to place me amongst "the best there is" so many years running, especially given some people here that I feel are truly brilliant.

I love NSG. It's just a shame it's dead. Killed by incompetent moderation (not a slight on the new folks, my concerns long predate Farn and Blaat), deliberate policy to protect trolls and toxic community members, and a willingness to sacrifice the safety of children to make a buck.

So, thank you all, really, it's an honor to be considered as someone who writes things that people like to read. It's just a shame that past incidents have utterly stripped me of any motivation to actually write them anymore. At least, not here.
