Enosis Discussion Thread

Postby Tsmida Eri » Mon Sep 23, 2013 2:08 pm

Originally Enosis was conceived as the idea that all Greek inhabited and originally inhabited lands by Greeks(including colonies) would be returned to Greece after it's independence from the Ottoman Empire. The broader term is now rarely used, and is almost always associated with Greek Nationalism, while modern believers in Enosis tend to believe that only North Epirus(Southern Albania) and Cyprus should be a part of Greece.

So feel free to discuss Enosis, and what it represents.

I believe that North Epirus, Southern Macedonia, Cyprus, Anatolia, and Turkish Thrace should all be returned to Greece. Especially Constantinople, since it's the holy city for the Orthodox Church and should be a part of a Orthodox country, not a Muslim one like Turkey. All of the land listed was originally settled and colonized by Greeks, and Greeks lived there for centuries with Greek being the majority(unlike their other colonies across the Med.), thus I believe that the land is still rightfully theirs and belongs to them.

Irredentism is a wasteful, destructive and inhumane ideology that deserves to be left in the dustbin of the first half of the 20th century, where it belongs.

There wasn't a unified Greek nation until the Macedonians conquered the area under Phillip II(?); the Greek colonies were separate countries, so Enosis is based on a false premise that ancient Greece was a country.

It's a horrible and illogical idea.

By your logic, Greece should be a part of Italy because of Rome, much of the middle east should be Iranian as it was once Achaemenid territory, etc. Giving territory to modern nations because their ancestors owned it thousands of years ago is absurd in every case.

It might be a nice sentiment, but I'm pretty sure that in practice something like that would never work without violent repercussions. And if we're going to judge who owns the land by who lived there first, why don't we give North and South America back to the natives?

Practically, Enosis would be impossible. Were it possible, though, I'd support it.
Knocking the minarets off the Hagia Sophia would be the first point of order after that.

it's really hard to not come charging into this thread in red facepaint waving a turkish flag shouting 1-0 1-0 and getting chased by the resident greek posters lambasting me for my poor history

by which i mean it's a terrible terrible idea

ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

Ah, but the Romans took their lands from the Latins, Etruscans, and Samnites; therefore there wouldn't be a unified Italy either.

Greek Cyprus and mostly Greek parts of Albania - sure. The parts that don't have a Greek majority (especially Eastern Thrace and Istanbul, which would turn Greece into a Turkish-majority state all by themselves) - God, no.

So you want Sicily back? Fine! :lol2:

No, srzl. Messing along with the borders of the European countries again? Wtf.
Also, totally useless. Thanks to the EU there's freedom of travel and trade between Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria. And eventually with Turkey, too. So, what's the point? Want to do some ethnic cleansing?

Why stop at Southern Macedonia? Is there any chance you could encroach further north?

I am partly serious; that region needs a civilizing influence.

Istanbul's population alone is bigger than Greece after all. Let them have it along with the rest of the East Thrace and then the Turks will come to power in the next elections and let Turkey annex Greece. :p

That's a stupid idea anyway. I can't understand how people seriously pursue such dreams.

Hint: I suggest the Turks to retain the name "Greece", so they will also get instant EU membership. :D

Speaking of which, doesn't like 90% of Greece's population live in either Athens or Thessaloniki?

I'd like to add that some Greeks didn't even consider the Macedonians to be of the Greek persuasion. So says Herodotus, anyway.

Aren't most of the inhabitants of modern Macedonia Slavic as well?

This whole thing sounds generally unreasonable. You can't just take over parts of other countries that were once part of yours. New people have moved in and the land belongs to them much more than it does to you.

They weren't part of a Greek country, there was no Greek country.

I believe so. It's why Macedonia is so adamantly against Greek annexation.

Stats:
The Macedonians (Macedonian: Македонци; transliterated: Makedonci) – also referred to as Macedonian Slavs[35] – are a South Slavic ethnic group who are primarily associated with the Republic of Macedonia. They speak the Macedonian language, a South Slavic language. About two thirds of all ethnic Macedonians live in the Republic of Macedonia and there are also communities in a number of other countries.

A pointless and ridiculous idea, which has been widely confined to the first half of the twentieth century.

And presumably the Greeks who believe in this have plans for the Turks who live in these areas?

Lincoln denied that reality in the same way. Yet American Exceptionalism and Manifest Destiny were and remain legitimate and adulated among the American population. I can't see why the Greeks shouldn't have their chance.

OP? I support the move. If only to see my religious homeland in proper hands. Except for the slavic nations. They aren't Greek.
