Probably has something to do with Europe having rather homogenous populations when they decided to first do a census. The US had to track race due to the Three-Fifths Compromise on slavery counting slaves as three-fifths of a person.

I think it is a stupid word that is mostly used by black people themselves and racist white southerners. The only way to kill the word is for some people to stop being racist and for rappers to stop using it to describe their "people." (I'm trying so hard not to sound racist right now.) I have noticed that it has split up into two different words, one ending with "ah" or "a" and the other ending with "er." The first word seems to be more benign, but still considered racist if a white person says it. Now you know my opinion, what do you think?

Have you heard how rappers tend to talk about women? How often they use the word "bitch"? You aren't going to get anywhere with appeals for them to not be offensive.

A racial group is pretty much defined by discrimination, the whole point of its inclusion in the census is to track and fight that.

No - I think that because it is offensive in most situations, it's a sensible word to use instead of going off on a "fuck" spree.

That does raise an interesting question: While all of those are considered racist/offensive, why is the "n-word" considered so particularly horrible above all the others that it can't even be written in full as they can?

As a "typical white person" I also don't quite understand the notion of n-word privileges, but I just leave it alone lest the PC types start bombarding me with explanations. Same goes for all the appropriated slurs for "underprivileged" groups that I'm not part of, like "queer" for the LGBT movement and "bitch" for the feminists. Backing off is easier than facing the Tumblr-types with their shrieks of privilege and appropriation.
