I personally believe that people should not be so sensitive to such words, it describes how African people were treated throughout history. Yes it was used in a negative context, and it should never be used in that context, but taking it out of textbooks doesn't really educate people. It only teaches us to live in a world where we have a list of words we can't even look at or use because they might offend someone. Soon we'll be downgrading the English language into nothing.

Infidel doesn't strike me as very offensive.

Actually, the original translation was "savage". Arab slave traders used it to refer to black sub-Saharan animists they conquered. It was later adopted by the Portuguese in Mozambique and simply meant "African" - today, there are still Portuguese and Dutch-speaking blacks in Sri Lanka that call themselves "Kaffirs" because at the time of their migration the word lacked any negative annotation.

In South African English/Afrikaans, the word was applied almost universally to the inhabitants of "British Kaffaria", an actual colony - and later to black South Africans in general. It was not considered a slur until the late 1950s, when African nationalists began rejecting it. More importantly, Kaffir's usage in the context of apartheid was considered offensive. The South African government replaced it with "Bantu" on official papers during an attempt to appease their critics. It's officially frowned upon in RSA, Namibia, and Zimbabwe today.

I think it is a stupid word that is mostly used by black people themselves and racist white southerners. The only way to kill the word is for some people to stop being racist and for rappers to stop using it to describe their "people." (I'm trying so hard not to sound racist right now.) I have noticed that it has split up into two different words, one ending with "ah" or "a" and the other ending with "er." The first word seems to be more benign, but still considered racist if a white person says it. Now you know my opinion, what do you think?

Words are just an arrangement of letters that have been given some sort of meaning. For all we know, in two hundred years, this sentence could be filled with racial slurs.
