I dislike the word but I find it unfair that non-blacks can't say (considered racist) it but some blacks (usually the more ignorant ones) glorify the word.

And I think it's stupid that with all of the inequality in the world how many white people like to fixate on this mundane thing and cry out about oppression, with all the unearned advantages garnered by somebody for just being born white you choose to complain about this.

Gun control is, and always has been, a tool of white supremacy.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."—former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman

I think it's only offensive if you let it be.

Being part Hungarian and Italian, there are racist insults for both of those nationalities but they're really ridiculous.

Maybe it's because there is more history of prejudice towards Negros than some others.

I think it has the potential to be incredibly offensive depending on the context. I confess to having behaved less than maturely and having physically assaulted a man for his use of it.

Well, it might be a slight overeaction to physically assault him, but in some way (that I don't approve off) you made noticeable that the N-word offended you. Calling out is the best solution.

I don't attempt to justify it I punched an old man in the face and kicked him when he tried to stand I am an asshole and I make no claims otherwise but I took offense and I made myself heard.

I'm not black, not white either but yeah I'm not black and I've been saying it through this thread in what I think was an appropriate manner, not using it as a slur not using it too casually like white people think they can just appropriate it for their everyday speech. I just used the word matter of factly to refer to the term in question and people's use of it. I think context is important.

Non-blacks can say it.

I only say the "N" when I sing along to rap songs or when I talk to my close friends (I have a handful of black friends but tons of white, asian, hispanic and middle-eastern friends) when I'm drunk. I would never use it in contempt to anyone. But I should stop saying it

You know, in high school, when we read novels that used the word out loud, the white kids would look around the room at those of us who were black as though they needed our permission. I find it insulting when a white person assumes I'll shout "racist!" if they say the word even when I know the context doesn't have any intent to insult anyone. It's more insulting than saying the word itself.

Who the hell cares if someone uses it? It's a word and people need to get over it. Saying an offensive word won't somehow turn the world into a genocidal, racist hellhole.

Non-blacks doesn't mean just white. Latinos (in my area, at least) will say it very freely as well. Though, this refers to the "-a" version, not the "-er" version, if we're making a distinction.

But it will offend people. The thing about offending people is that they tend to be offended afterwards.

That's why civilized society has something called 'Freedom of Speech'. People have a right to believe what they wish and voice their opinions.
