This is a complete propaganda operation. The media is crying OMG SHUTDOWN and then in an article further down says "how it will affect you" and basically only says that National Parks will be closed. Not to worry, the IRS will still steal your money, the CIA and army will still bomb foreigners, the NSA will still spy on you, the FBI/SS will still stomp on your rights, etc.

Its a complete joke, and the fact that the media is doing this, openly lying and misleading, and then even further, covering up the true source of the shutdown: that Democrats refuse to pass a reasonable budget or be open about the massive debt and spending they want to take on, is downright terrifying. The media, with few exceptions, has become a mouthpiece for the White House.

i doubt it, but we are 3 square meals away from ripping eachother to pieces. I like to think if the government stays closed for more than a month, all the government employees lynch congress. literally, strap them to horses and lynch them on the national mall.

No, it is because the Democrats will not give into the GOP's blackmail, that is only around because the Republicans refuse to admit that they lost the elections.

I guess we could use the flagpoles around the Washington munument for it too. Maybe even the monument itself (although if we were going for appropriateness we should probably find some way to hang them from the Jefferson memorial).

Not just because the will isn't there for a government shutdown anymore, but even politically there are groups in the house that want to undercut Cruz and be the group that actually solved the problem for 2016 reasons. A deal could have been negotiated if the Reid had wanted one and it wouldn't have been that harmful for Obamacare. I believe that strongly.

What deal? What specifically did the perpetrators of this shutdown IE the tea party wingnuts I've mentioned time and again offer in exchange for a delay of the implementation of healthcare reform? Did they offer campaign finance reform? Firearms control legislation? Expanded women's health rights? The re-enstatement of the Voting Rights Act in its entirety? Where were these magical bargaing chips that somehow every media outlet missed that were being offered in exchange for that delay? Because "do what we want or else we'll put government workers out of work and make life hard for US Citizens at large" is no deal, it's still an act of hostage-taking.

Neutraligon wrote:
So, what deal would have been accepted that favored democrats? And, what do you mean by wouldn't be that harmful, postponing the individual mandate is very harmful to Obamacare.

One thing I heard repeatedly (and when I use the term repeatedly, I mean it was clearly a talking point, like the use of "hostage-taking" in a majority of the posts in this thread) was the medical device tax. Now when you hear something brought up in several interviews with different people, they are being told to say that. Or, they are aware of background information. Another that I heard a few times was opening up insurance to be easier to buy across state lines. I also heard talk (this time not from a republican in the house, but one that tried to run in my district) of lowering the fines associated with the individual mandate for a year.

There was plenty that could have been put out there. You don't need to get many moderate republicans in the house on your side to get a majority of Dems and moderate Reps.

You don't get to tell the Republicans, "look, we have the senate, we have the Presidency, that's 2/3 so please pass exactly what we want until you get 2/3." That's not how American governance works. You have to give up a little bit when you need a little support from the other party.
