DC police have stated that one suspect is a younger white male with military-style fatigues and a handgun. The other is an older (50s) black male also with military-style fatigues and a long gun of some sort. DC police have also said that one suspect is dead, but the other two may be at large.

Link

Thoughts and prayers go out to those directly affected by this heinous act. Hopefully the remaining suspects-at-large will be captured alive.

America has actually had remarkably few mass shootings this year.

Over a period of 8 1/2 months there have been 3 mass shootings with a combined death toll of 15.

Clearly this calls for rash action and the passing and repealing of many laws, and a from scratch rewrite of the US Constitution.

It is likely because they are becoming less common, if things are all too common they cease to be news worthy.

BBC says:

1559: ABC News says it has two sources saying that the gunman is dead at the scene - he is reported to be a 50-year-old Navy employee - whose "employment status was recently changed". It has no confirmation of a second shooter.

Disgruntled Navymen?

SkyNews mentioned the same possibility. *shrug* probable far too early to be sure either way.

I just hope that the killcount doesn't rise.

Likely a civilian naval employee.

Cami McCormick CBS News tweets: Law enforcement officials tells CBS News Navy Yard gunman had a handgun, an AR 15 assault rifle, and a shotgun

Doesn't sound military-related. Though, aren't assault weapons banned in DC?

Why should that make a difference when it's within a short drive of places with less stringent gun laws?

Well since the assault weapons bans are generally based on appearance with very specific traits the weapon can often times be very slightly cosmetically modified and be legal.

Thats because there is no trait unique to AR's that makes them dangerous and for medium range target shooting they tend to safer than many of the alternatives.

Ok since this is inevitably gonna turn into a gun control debate and I've been looking for research on the matter anyway:

Does anyone know of any studies or research which looks at whether there is a global (not just the USA) correlation between gun ownership and homicides (all homicides, not just gun-related)?

It's actually really hard to find anything reliable which doesn't just look at the USA or gun homicides.

The US Navy only likes guns when they're attached to boats.
