While it is fairly restricted, there is still quite a bit of leeway.

Compared to the US, it is pretty stringent. And unlike the US, it actually worked.

Compared to Norway automatics in the US are more tightly controlled. You can own them only with a license and the government has not issued new licenses since 1986.

I think Japan has the most strict gun laws in the world, handguns are totally banned for civilians and a licence and safety course is required for rifles, they have a very low violent crime rate.

What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? Or if during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? Gun laws are only one factor related to violence. Things like poverty and mental illness are also causes. Demographics are an overlooked factor as well, states with a high number of unemployed, lower class young men will have much higher rates of violent crime.

I'm pretty they still issue licenses but you can only buy automatic firearms that were registered before 1986, provided you jump through all the hoops to purchase them, and find someone to sell one to you.

I may be wrong though.
If at first you don't succeed try again with an equally horrible plan.

I've never seen a general wearing a sidearm, ever.

I once saw a Cavalry General wearing cow boy boots, a Civil war era Calvary hat and two ivory handled revolvers.

And yes he thought he was Patton.

Another problem with the U.S. is their culture of selfishness and lack of respect for other people and authority. I saw an interview with a Swiss lawmaker and he said they don't have the typical American attitude that you can shoot someone if they "look at you funny."

Correct, which is why no matter if a state has more gun control or less gun control, crime still remains the same.

As for being selfish and lack of respect? IT's because we believe no one is born respected, IE if they are asshate don't expect respect.

Actually that's a good thing. But let's keep the background checks.
