Japan is also not a country of 300 million+ people with widely different laws and people every 400 or so miles in any dirrection

But they have an Authoritarian government. Japanese culture is based on obedience and citizen disarmament.

Gun laws are only one factor related to violence. Things like poverty and mental illness are also causes. Demographics are an overlooked factor as well, states with a high number of unemployed, lower class young men will have much higher rates of violent crime.

I'm pretty they still issue licenses but you can only buy automatic firearms that were registered before 1986, provided you jump through all the hoops to purchase them, and find someone to sell one to you.
