I do too, but I find it awkward. "They" can be singular, but to be so it relies on context and with the long sentences I'm prone to use I know my meaning is less clear when I use a third person pronoun which isn't unambiguously singular.

Can't fight language though. It's a tool not an agent.

Do you also have a problem with the word "you"? I fail to see any inherent awkwardness with "they" being used for both singular and plural when "you" does the exact same thing.

Yes, actually I do have a problem with the word "you". For the sake of clarity it is sometimes better to say "you all" to make it explicitly plural.

Most of the rest of the English speaking world has no problem with the dual singular/plural usage of "you". And just because you sometimes have to say "yall" doesn't mean that the plural usage has to be scrapped.
