I don't assume male. It's a crappy thing to do, particularly in an environment where by their own declaration most people are male.
It's crappy, because it requires anyone who objects to explicitly state their sex/gender. People should be free to do that, but they shouldn't be required to do it, to correct someone else's assumptions. It's better the assumption isn't made in the first place!
That's why I imagine all of you without balls until told otherwise.
I also try to use 'they' when I don't know the gender.
