1. Free Speech, duh.
2. Usually, banning something often doesn't make it go away. It just drives it underground, making it turn into an extremist (well, racism is a pretty extreme viewpoint nowadays, but you get the point) viewpoint or group. It's like trying to ban Nazism or Christianity (Just an example, folks), if you hate one or the other. It doesn't work.

To clarify, I would rather not ~actually lash people for being racist. I would just rather them be public disgraces.

Here's how I would define racism; the systematic, societal conflict between two or more races. The color lines are arbitrary, mind you, and we need to get rid of them. One way of doing that is not referring to people as over-sensitive for the way they react when they encounter what they perceive as racism. People of Color, in particular - who are defined as non-whites, based on current patterns of oppression, tend to have a lens to see racism that white folks do not. So calling them idiots is a grievous way of silencing their dissent.

Of course, if you aren't aware, or are actively in denial of the fact that the world is currently a white supremacist system, I suppose you're not going to get it.

True. Then again, that's true with any criminal charge. Especially so with charges of a violent crime against one or more people.
