On why no one must know about Nationstates :p

The title may be a little too much, but hear me out.

So, I was having dinner with my parents, and they were quite interested in my discussions on the forum. So, I was just talking with them about the thing that I liked the most: the fact that you have all these ideologies here, from anarcho-monarchism to fascism. But... I shouldn't have said I was having discussions with fascists.

My parents were not amused, and the ranting about fascism (which I probably know thrice as well as them by know) and such was pretty weird.

So, any thoughts on this? Did anything comparable happen to you? Do you balk at telling friends and/or family what you discuss sometimes on Nationstates?

That's what you get when something's on the Internet...all the armpits of the world come and rub up against NS -- Neo-Nazis, adspammers, picspammers who post nasty-ass pictures, trolls... that's just a fact of life about the web, and something we just have to suck up.

I use sense and don't bring up things likely to inspire long debates or rants if I don't want to hear them. I do this for NS and all other material, online and offline.

Fascism is one of those words where the connotation has supplanted the actual meaning. Most people in Western countries hear fascist and automatically change it to Nazi. I would recommend not using it outside of NS and discussions with people who have studied politics.

That said, considering that most of my family are conservative Christians, I don't discuss the things I post about on NSG.

2. That's intellectual blindness for you. Sometime I quite enjoy it and say something, knowing perfectly well that whomever I am talking to will totally go off on it specifically so I can rip his/her argument apart.

4.Yes; I make a game of deconstructing the agreements presented. Once I forced a religious fundamentalist into admitting that the arguments he used to justify god having moral authority also justify abortion, I think that made his head explode.

He said it was too intense for him, and was a little shocked at my political views (which I do not express very often in real life for obvious reasons). He has subsequently tried to debate me and if there is drinking involved things get heated.

My father finds nice that I talk about important topics with people elsewhere all over the world and that I'm practically fluent in English except for hearing and speaking without ever doing a language course.

People here are generally nicer and smarter than the average ones in Brazil and all the unnice people are mostly on other continents so

Ditto. Nearly all my friends think I'm weird for being on here, so I've learned to do it discreetly.

As for the OP, I've had an almost identical experience. When I went to a 4th of July party a couple months ago, I brought up having discussions with fascists. The hosts were very skeptical of my claim that people actually held those views, and even when I explained what those views were, they were still not buying it. Of course, I don't know for sure that these people actually hold these views, but they seem pretty darn convinced.

I can't have the conversations I have here in my social life. I know a couple of people I can seriously discuss politics with, ranging from the true implications and application of Communism, Fascism, etc, but most of the time people here anything other that Republican and Democrat and get freaked out.
