This measure would make sense, as NPE said, if it was in conjunction with a move to raise the amount of money put into food stamps so poor people could actually afford to buy healthy.
As it currently stands this is pretty much an attempt to replace junk food with a heaping helping of...nothing!

It's not about buying only organic food, it's about not buying fast food or candy, soda, etc. Not everything that isn't junk food is organic, and not everything that's not organic is junk food.

It's an example, yes, but the same holds true down the line - healthy stuff just costs more. It might not make such a difference to us, but it does to those below the poverty line.

The title is a bit misleading, i was ready to say: "isn't the GOP the party of free market choice?!"....then i read the part about food stamps....

And it seems like a rather sane proposal. I know its not the "best" source, but cracked's John Cheese complained that one of the reasons poor people are ofter fat is not due to them eating a lot, but because most of the food they eat is cheap fast food with little to none nutritional value....

The question, however, is, will poor people afford "healthy" food for the entire month with their current allowance?
if not, are the Republicans willing to put more money to cover the difference?

Well, yes. It does cost more, though not humongously more. But if it becomes more popular because people are more or less forced to buy it, the price will likely go down over time. And there's no reason Congress couldn't decide to allocate more money for food stamps - as to what to cut in return, we won't need as much money for health care when there's less obese people walking around, so allocate the money you will no longer for need for health care to help this bill work more effectively.

Well, then, support this plan with the stipulation that there have to be more food stamps made available to deserving people so they can actually afford to buy healthy stuff. That would actually make some kind of sense.
But anything less - including the plan as it stands - is basically a deliberate attempt to take food out of the mouths of poor people.

Where was this outrage when Mayor Bloomberg blocked food aid to Hurricane Sandy victims because of their salt and fat content?

...What? Why? Why do you people believe this myth that if more people buy something, prices will automatically go down no matter what? That's not how markets work in reality. That's only true in models...models that make a shitload of assumptions to simplify reality.
