West Faristan2 wrote:During the discussion of Pvt. Manning the issue of pronouns and transgender issues came up. With some rather douchey members referring to Chelsea Manning as 'it'. So my question is is it acceptable to refer to someone who is transgender as 'it'?

My opinion is that it isn't acceptable.

Now lets see if we can reach a consensus on this issue faster that the Mods can.

Pronouns in the case of cisgendered (ie. normal, not transgendered) people are trivial.
MtF (Male to Female) transgendered people should be called 'she'. (she/her/hers)
FtM (Female to Male) transgendered people should be called 'he' (he/him/his)
[tumblr]-gendered people might request the usage of exotic gender-neutral pronouns. It's polite to honor their request, however, for people with ambiguous or no gender identification, singular they (they/them/their) can be used.
It (it/it/its) should be used for inanimate objects ONLY.

So, scholars of pronouns and privilege-checking, I need your help understanding things.

If I say I'm a dog, do people actually have to acknowledge me as a dog provided I honestly believe that, and if people don't do that are they being bigoted? If they don't have to, will they have to in the future?

This is a world I haven't been exposed because I have not ever visited Tumblr and I'm not getting a degree Gender Studies or anything like that.

Seriously, Latin languages are not that hard across each other. They use the same syntax and verb structure so it's relatively easy to translate between one another.

Just learn Portuguese before Spanish and everything is fine.

I hate the accent of foreigners (especially Anglophones) who seem to think Portuguese is just some kind of Spanish. Perhaps the worst I've ever come across.

I would feel insulted too if that was to happen.

Then again, that's the deficiency of the Latin languages, that foreigners seem to think that as long as you know how to pronunciate one, you know them all. And someone with experience and listened to Italians, Portuguese, and being Hispanic here can tell you, they are never the same.

"Dog" is not a natural state of being for a non-defective human being.
"Male", "Female" is.
