I mean not knowing Picard I can understand. He is like somewhere around the importance grade of Peter and Paul.

I meant nobody here was saying it. I'm aware of idiots outside this forum who say it.

I have encountered fake geeks, men and women.

What I'm saying is that you shouldn't call yourself an X-men fan if you have no clue who Wolverine is.

Why, though? Maybe you just saw X-Men: First Class and really liked it. Maybe you obsessively read X-Men comics in the 70s and haven't really kept up with the fandom since. Those people sound like X-Men fans to me, and there's no reason they'd know anything about Wolverine. I just don't see the point of having minimum standards for who gets to "claim" a fandom. If someone calls himself an X-Men fan and doesn't know who Wolverine is, rather than scoffing at him, why not just say, "Hey, you should check out one of the many X-Men comics/shows/movies involving Wolverine, because he's a pretty cool character"?

Funny enough, I was thinking of the "First Class" example, and it's a good one. Wolverine isn't in the movie AT ALL, except for a brief, unidentified cameo (which, is a fucking hilarious scene if you get it, but there's absolutly no reason anyone would unless they knew who Hugh Jackman played in prior movies AND understood Wolverine had a very long lifespan, it was a fan toss)

Liking comic books isn't fucking "srs business". It's not someone's job. It's not like if people who call themselves doctors who really aren't. People tend to die when that happens.

I can not, for the life of me, fathom why anyone would ever, in the slightest little bit, have a problem with how certain people identify as fans, if they don't meet special snowflake arbitary criteria.

Why? It's no skin off your back or however that expression goes.

its simply that calling out girls specificlly is rather sexist.

Of course it is. If you didn't think that "geek culture" had a problem with misogyny then you haven't been paying attention in the last two years.

I personally feel that a person should have to at least read textbooks for fun to consider themselves geeks.

I think you're confusing "geeks" and "nerds" here.

That's not the point. Kirk is the Jesus of Trek in the sense that he is the progenitor prophet, the guy that was the face and personification of it for a very long time. Even people who don't like his series should at the very least know of him in the sense of knowing where the whole thing came from.

I am honestly not either, but at least I try to be gentle, considerate and unprejudiced.

Treating differently someone, to the point of socially ostracizing for not "respecting" their "defined set of behaviors" given for having biological set X is about as stupid as racism or classism. But of course Hippo and the likes will deny that it is what they are doing, sadly.

I feel I'm safe in asserting that there is more Star Trek without Kirk than there is with Kirk at this point. There is whole reams of Star Trek someone could watch and think to themselves "That was great, I really like this Star Trek thing" without any exposure to Kirk. What's the problem with that?
