No he does have a point. A trekkie that can't name Kirk, Spock and maybe MC Coy is kind of like a christian that can't name Jesus.

I like how you corrected Spock after mockery but not McCoy. Also, how could you leave out Scotty?

Granted, if you grew up on the Next Generation or Voyager or DS9 (which gets way more hate than it should) then you might not know Kirk or Spock or TOS outside of the countless references they get everywhere else (e.g. "Dammit <name>, I'm a <blank> not a <blank>" that pop up in other popular media). At least at first.

Considering that the new movies are all about the first generation cast, even the casual fan knows about them. They might not know who William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy are or who George Takei is outside of his wonderful facebook posts. They might not know that Nichelle Nichols had to be hired as a guest star for each episode because the studios wouldn't hire a black actress full time. They might not know that she got a lot of hate mail. They might not know that Shatner and Nichols purposely flubbed their lines in all the cuts so television networks would have to show the first interracial kiss on television... but people who are new to Trek fandom certainly know who Kirk and Spock are.

The idea of Kirk being Star Trek Jesus is pretty ludicrous. TNG was, well, "lightyears" ahead of TOS.

That's not the point. Kirk is the Jesus of Trek in the sense that he is the progenitor prophet, the guy that was the face and personification of it for a very long time. Even people who don't like his series should at the very least know of him in the sense of knowing where the whole thing came from.

I think you're taking it too seriously, mate.

I find the arguments about "fake geek girls" to be rather akin to the arguments against homosexuals. You hear a lot about how those damned fags are throwing it in our faces by...you know, EXISTING. He's HOLDING HANDS WITH ANOTHER MAN! He's just RUBBING OUR FACES IN IT!

The primary complaint I've seen about these "gamer girls wanting attention" is basically...she refuses to hide the fact that she exists. She flaunts the fact that she both palys video games AND posesses a vagina she's not willing to spread wide for whatever fat, sweaty inexperienced slob wants to take a go at her.

As demonstrated by every single letter of Tony Harris' wanksock caked rant, they seem to think that real are there for their entertainment, they can't understand that maybe she's doing something for her pleasure.

I mean not knowing Picard I can understand. He is like somewhere around the importance grade of Peter and Paul.
And Janeway or Archer are about the level of the other Marry. (not the virgin)

But Kirk is bleeding Jesus.

I feel I'm safe in asserting that there is more Star Trek without Kirk than there is with Kirk at this point. There is whole reams of Star Trek someone could watch and think to themselves "That was great, I really like this Star Trek thing" without any exposure to Kirk. What's the problem with that? To echo the Bat lawyer, who are you to tell those people that they're not really fans? By what authority do you set out the rules for what makes a fan?

You know, let's think about that. "KirK" as a character appeared in 80 Original Series episodes, 22 Animated Series Episodes, and 9 of the 12 movies (first 6 was a TOS cast set of movies, Generations was a crossover, and the last 2 are continuity reboots featuring a non Shatner Kirk)

All total, 108 pieces of media.

Star Trek also is composed of 178 episodes of the Next Generation, 172 episodes of Voyager, 176 Deep Space 9, and 98 Enterprise, along with 3 movies that do not feature Kirk.

627 pieces of media

In fact, of all total, of the 726 episodes and 9 movies of star trek, only a total of 108 of them ACTUALLY feature Kirk.

A total of 85% of the television media produced under "star trek" doesn't feature Kirk at all.

Neo Art demonstrably doesn't care about sexism aimed at men, loves to demand that men conform to traditional masculine gender roles, loves to shame men for sexual activity or lack thereof, etc. Only really cares about sexist shit if women are being victimized.

One of my "favorite" rants I've seen (on another forum) about this phenomenon was about a female gamer who does videos on Youtube of herself playing games - roughly 90% of the screen is the game, and 10% is her on a webcam talking about the game. The honest-to-god argument someone made for how she is a horrible evil attention whore was "in one of her videos, she is wearing a tank top, and you can see a little bit of her cleavage." That was literally it. That was his entire proof that she was an evil, attention-whoring, "fake geek girl" out to torment men. She was playing a video game while not actively hiding the fact that she had breasts. THAT BITCH.

This problem arises when men assume that women only do things to attract the attention of men. Or rather, that this is the only reason that women hang out in spaces that are traditionally full of men.

It might be that these men have so little experience with women and are so insecure around them that they don't know that women are a diverse group of people who all have different personalities and like different things. It might also be that these men could only fathom picking up a "girly" hobby for the sake of picking up women and they're just projecting this onto women they see in their hobby.

It might also be that they're just sexist assholes who are upset that they can't actually expect a "No Girls Allowed" sign to be enforceable.

"male virgin shaming"? Oh come the fuck on do you people HAVE to be walking persecution complexes all the fucking time?

Do you have to run around attacking people for not having sex often enough? Because when you make personal attacks on those grounds against classes of people, you are engaged in what can quite reasonably called virgin shaming, and are sitting on the same moral low ground as Mika Brzezinski attacking Miley Cyrus.

And without even the excuse of "BUT SHE'S A CELEBRITY SO SHE SHOULD BE SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE!"

I remember on NSG, one female game critic came up, and a certain group of people were so doggedly insistant that she couldn't ACTUALLY be a real gamer, constantly upping the anti when presented with real evidence that yes, she's a woman, yes, she plays video games, yes, she then talks about them that in the end they were INSISTING that she actually just rented all those video games, posed for the pictures of her in front of stacks of video games, and then just watched youtube videos about the games that she discusses in thorough detail of her reviews.

People were more willing to believe that this woman had constructed an elaborate ruse, fabricated tons of evidence, and elicited people in this grand conspiracy to trick 13 year old boys that there may be women out there who actually play games. This was, to them, more probable than the idea that someone can play videogames and have tits at the same time.
