I note that this poll you quote as a source appears to have only collected data from countries that they knew they'd get a reasonable anti-American response. Until it includes data from every country in the world it ceases to be credible and free from bias.

Lol
Potential anti-American bais on the IOC selection council... which to be fair is somewhat understandable since circa 2007 the US wasn't exactly making a good name for itself thanks to the yahoos in charge screwing things up for a lot of the world. Still, as far as location, venues, history of hosting big events and making use of the buildings afterwords, clearly Chicago was the best choice if one took the "ehmergerd we've never had one down there" sentimentality out of it. There's a reason there's never been an Olympic Games in South America, most of the continent has been underdeveloped for far too long. Yes Brazil is expanding and moderninzing, but they still have so many hurdles to overcome that Chicago or Tokyo could deal with more readily.

Plus given how Rio couldn't handle one funny old jesuit in robes from Argentina and the pandemonium he created wherever he went, I think the Chicago bid is starting to look a bit more reasonable these days.

I'd love to see them being in Istanbul (seeing how often they've bid for them - they've bid for every one since 2000, with the exception of 2016).
Please note: Central Lothian is the direct successor to Mid Lothian*. As a result, I am still called Rebecca, I am still a Grammar Nazi and most information pertaining to ML also applies to CL (although I will be taking this time to change a few things).

* - And I may refer to the country as Mid Lothian. If I do, assume that I mean Central Lothian. (And not to be confused with "Midlothian" - I'm using that as a fascist version of CL.)

Izmir will most probably get expo 2020. What I'm annoyed is the decision about euro 2020. That was nothing but a real unfairness to Turkey since it was the only serious candidate for the event so they didn't want to give it to Turkey.

My dream would be Turkey getting Euro 2020 and Tokyo getting this. I prefer Euro over Olympics anyway.

I should say; Japan wants these games more than us or Spain. I watched their promotional video as well as other pro-Tokyo videos and saw some pictures there indicating how they are really holding their breath to get this event. It's just unfair if they don't deserve to host it just because they hosted it about a half century ago. I'm sure they will do a great job.

As a Turk; we don't deserve this one. We deserved Euro 2020.

Your attitudes towards economics appear communist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a humanist.
To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a sensible realistic egalitarian with several strong convictions.

I have no idea, because what happened in Istanbul this year may not be reflective of what the political climate will be in 2020. Madrid seems to be my narrow narrow last choice because of the debt crisis which give a negative impression to the people who decide who will get the Olympics, and then there is the new president coming in: my top three are Bach, Carrion and Miang.

The suggestion of the potential is still dumb.

The USA has hosted these kinds of events multiple times. But these committees now like spreading them to new places, industrialising places and places with growing presence in the world. It's why the 2002 World Cup was held in Japan/South Korea, 2008 Olympics in China, 2010 World Cup in South Africa, why the 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil, the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, most likely why Turkey is a frontrunner to host the 2020 Olympics, and why the 2016 Olympics will be held in Brazil (since they fit all three of those things). It's about promoting these kinds places to encourage investment there, and encouraging them to actually build and develop these facilities rather than just use ones which are already there.

Also, to call anywhere "undeveloped", let alone South America (which is much more advanced than most people give it credit for), is typical idiotic Western arrogance.

Spain is in financial difficulties and has been having street protests. Turkey has been having much more street protests. So unless, those two nation solve these problems before 2020, No.

They should pick an African nation. Maybe, Morocco. But the problem is that some nations cannot afford to build the necessary sports and housing infrastructure expenses.

Why Morocco? I'm just curious as to what Morocco could offer to deserve to host such a big event.

I hope you were talking to Dominus and not me, because I don't condone my fellow city dweller's actions, chalking them up as "meatheat behavior." I was just making a point that Chicago did win an Olympic bid before, but because of one group protesting the idea of another international gathering running alongside the World's Fair, the Olympics were merged with the World's Fair, and were considered an afterthought in the grand scheme of things.

Several nations decided not to make the trip, because of the Sino-Japanese War leading to only 52 athletes from 11 nations outside of the US competing. In comparison, the US had TEN TIMES as many athletes (526) leading to all time record medal totals. When a host nation wins 18 times more medals than any other nation, something is most certainly wrong.

I'd prefer it go to Tokyo.
Madrid is a simply baffling option.
If it goes to Istanbul i'll consider it a decent 2nd choice.
What we should be worried about, is what happens if Tokyo or Istanbul are first to be knocked out.
We may get their endorsers flipping their shit and voting madrid out of spite.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

In any case, I'd like Istanbul, because it would be a first for the Arab world. Then again, not sure how well that would go. Not even sure how well the ones in Brazil will go.

Tokyo already held it before, but they can afford it and they seem pretty stable.

Turkey isn't in the Arab world...

The modern Turks are largely the descendants of Turkic migrants who originated in western China which spoke Altaic languages (that is, stuff like Mongolian/Japanese/Manchu/etc), as well as the indigenous peoples of the area who were gradually assimilated, who before then, I'm assuming, probably spoke Greek.

Right.

Anyway, it would be interesting if Istanbul got it, a first for the Arab world. But I don't think it would be wise.
