Agreed. It's a statement of conformity to a state, and is not truly patriotic.

Christians and Muslims both worship the ''God'' of Abraham. So it's not okay.

No, my point is that many Christians don't consider Muslims to worship the same god. It was a satire of that idea.

So, wait, what about when Muslim students recite the pledge? CONFUSED I AM!

What Muslim students? There are no Muslims in America.

No, they wouldn't do anything at all. They actually do that at your school?

Yeah, same with my school. The flag's just always kept up and no one cares about it, I think.

We just say it third period during 3NTV--our school's TV network. That is, whenever anyone notices it's even on.

It provides an opportunity to teach students the meaning of "irony." I mean come on, how much more hilarious can you get than inserting the deeply divisive phrase "under god" right before "indivisible" in the Pledge?

Would that strictly be ironic though?
"You can't fight in here! This is the War Room!" is comically ironic. Putting a divisive phrase immediately after "indivisible" merely sounds like being thick.

Also, why to a flag?

The flag is typically the embodiment of the nation and what it stands for.

The US flag, for example, contains the fifty states of the Union and has thirteen stripes signifying some struggle or other.
The flag of the United Kingdom is an amalgam of the flags of Northern Ireland, Scotland and England.

And yet nobody in the UK would even consider taking an oath to a flag. They're taken to the crown, if anything. It's pretty much just the US that has this weird obsession with its flag.

Why should children be pledging their allegiance to the state, anyway?

Because the State is never wrong, and how else will your show your patriotism? By voting and helping in your community? Nonsense!

Exactly the same thing could be said about France, or Russia, or India, or Germany, and indeed every other country for which I am aware of the standard process for this thing, with the word "crown" variously swapped for "nation", "republic", "constitution", "people" or something else appropriate. Not the flag. My favourite is the Singaporean version:

We, the citizens of Singapore,
pledge ourselves as one united people,
regardless of race, language or religion,
to build a democratic society
based on justice and equality
so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and
progress for our nation.

I don't think the Pledge should be recited at all, seeing as how most children barely understand what the words mean.

The Union will instead, fall.

Dealing with a banking crisis was difficult enough, but at least there were public-sector balance sheets on to which the problems could be moved. Once you move into sovereign debt, there is no answer; there’s no backstop.
