If the US became a monarchy, it would be...

It already has man and other such condemnations which are substantiated by nothing and make me sound like a child.

Actually, it isn't a new idea at all. There are several types of elected monarchies. Strictly speaking the US is already a limited term elective monarchy. New Kingdoms in the modern era elected their first King, although usually not by direct election, but election by the legislature.
Home States
Republic of Landana (in a state of anarchy)
Duchy of Ostbär
Principality of Arbour
Bishopric of Nunnendorf
Republic of Casque

Overseas States
Emirate of Seeri
Federation of Placken Asia
The Condominium of Mani

Southern Babylonia wrote:So, a hypothetical question for you guys:

Let's say it was declared tomorrow that the United States needed to become a constitutional monarchy, and everyone agreed to this proposition. Congress, the Senate, etc. would work the exact same way, the only difference being the position of a figurehead who could do nothing but give the royal seal of approval. In the end, they decided to allow every American to vote on who the first monarch would be. From that moment onwards, the position would be hereditary.

1. Now, supposing there was no voter fraud, who do you think would be elected to the office? Would it be a politician? A singer? An actor/actrice? Would this be the beginning of the Bradjolinian dynasty?

I'd like it to be the Lee family.

2. Regardless of whether or not you think they WOULD be elected, supposing you personally had to appoint one, who would it be? Would you at all be inclined to give yourself the position? If so, why would you want it?

No. I wouldn't like that position.

3. Do you think, given a good degree of acceptance of the citizens of the US, that this monarchy could last? How do you think the international community would react? Would they want to influence the choice?

It could, given the degree of investment the Lee's have placed in this nation, perpetuate. I'd like to believe that the UK and the Commonwealth would welcome the US to civilization and the world would breathe a sigh of relief at the (final) stability in American politics.

4. If it was simply decreed today, without any foregone conclusions about the general American population being more or less in favour of it, what do you think THEIR reaction would be? Would they be (obviously many would be) furious? Angered? Disconcerted? Apathetic? Content? Glad? Enthusiastic?

I think the larger populace would revolt in ignorant stupor. I'd approve of the move though. As in... I'd become giddy like a little girl.

We could do a lot worse.

For that matter, we could do a lot worse than the OP's suggestion of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. An actor could make a good figurehead. And doesn't Jolie do humanitarian stuff with the UN?

However, I am opposed to a monarchy on principle because I don't believe in treating a person as superior based on their family rather than their character, abilities, and accomplishments.

No.

At least King Steven the First of the House of Colbert would be funny and interesting. King Ted would just be depressing and infuriating.

If this ever happened I would go the streets, riot and destroy as much as possible before getting the hell out here. Period.

This is the only thing I have to add to this thread. To America be a monarchy it would be to violante the founding principles of our nation.

Some things to consider when deciding who the monarch should be are weather they have heirs and who those heirs are.
