I would be in favor when better safeguards are in place as well as disposal of nuclear waste that has ZERO chance of contaminating the planet.

More importantly, we should also focus on research for fusion reactors. It's a very difficult source of energy, but the successful invention of a fusion power plant would end all problems of our energy crisis.

Fusion has been "just 20 years away" for twenty years now.

I say we build a network of LFT reactors first, as they are safer, smaller, and more efficient than the Uranium plants that we built to provide ammo for the nuclear arms race. Once that's done, we can divert additional resources to trying to achieve fusion.

Most reactors reuse "Spent" Fuel till it is nothing but a bit of DU that's used in tank shot and armor

The thing is, if ITER proves fusion to be a viable source of energy, why would we not focus on it? Yes, LFTR is one of the best sources of energy we have so far, but if fusion can actually generate energy would we not be better served using it?

Even if ITER is successful in producing a self-sustaining fusion reaction, there's no guarantee that the net energy generated will be more than that produced by a LFTR. There's also no guarantee that it'd be cost effective.

It's certainly not healthy, but living there would not be much worse than smoking a pack a day.

Are you crazy? The lead could get out of the container.

Just vitrify the waste, put it in a stainless steel container and dump it into a deep hole in a geologically stable area far above the water table.

I'm against uranium/plutonium reactors because we don't know how to eliminate a waste that can be extremely dangerous for millions of years plus Fukushima is really a good example of what happens when a power plant gets some damage...

I'm absolutely pro Thorium nuclear reactors and quite favorable to fusion.... mainly because thorium decades in "only" 500 years and it should be much more safer (I'm not so enthusiast about fusion because it'll need hydrogen to work and probably in the future will start a "water rush" instead of a "oil rush")... plus my country is the second main financier after the USA of these two projects so...

I've never been a fan of nuclear energy, but then, as a New Zealander, it isn't terribly surprising, ever since we told the US to 'fuck off' with all their nuclear-powered and/or armed vessels. It probably never helped anyone when the French were found guilty of the Rainbow Warrior attack, and then no nation overseas really bothered to condemn a violation of sovereignty,

Of course, in New Zealand we have all sorts of alternative power sources, such as Hydro, Geothermal and so forth. So we probably don't really need any.

Yeah we do.

Even just dumping it into the Ocean should be considered, It was done for decades by all the major nuclear states and the Environmental effects have been negligible. Turns out that water provides excellent radiation shielding.

Thesan wrote:Fukushima is really a good example of what happens when a power plant gets some damage...

Not really, the plant was built in the 60's.

This plant was closer to the epicenter and was also hit by the Tsunami. It shut down without incident and became a refuge for locals who lost their homes. It was built in the 80's.

That being said I am also a big fan of Thorium.

I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.
