The Power of the Atom.

Postby Tule » Sun Sep 01, 2013 6:50 pm

During the 1950's Nuclear energy seemed to be the power source of the future. This newly available source of energy was several orders of magnitude more powerful than any other known power source.

For the next 20 years, nuclear power stations sprouted all over the world like mushrooms and became one of the most common sources of electricity in the developed world.
This growth slowed down significantly during the 80's because of the nuclear accidents at Three Mile Island in 1979 and Chernobyl in 1986.

Since about 2001, concerns about global warming has renewed public interest in nuclear energy, due to it being a low-carbon energy source.
However, this nuclear renaissance has been threatened by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of 2011, which resulted in several European countries deciding to abandon nuclear energy.

So NSG, how should humanity power its future?

Personally, I think nuclear energy is one of the best options we have when it comes to providing energy to future generations.

Nuclear power is good.

So long as the people operating the stations know what they're doing.

As long as the power plant is not a Cadbury Cream Egg waiting to be cracked open.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

I'm really sad that this wasn't a Fallout 3 discussion thread... nonetheless, I love the concept of nuclear power, and I think that as long as we dispose of the waste safely and responsibly, we should build many more power plants in the future.

I don't like nuclear power simply because when it does fuck up, the results are catastrophic.

Nuclear power should continued to be used in the future, as long as laws are implemented to keep incidents like Chernobyl and Three Mile Island don't happen again

It's fine so long as other renewable energy sources are also invested in. Also looking into ways to increase efficiency should be considered.
Their also needs to be places to safely store the waste.

And you won't be working in a Nuclear Power Plant, leaving others to keep things from going to hell. Of course, it'll be impossible for things like that to not happen, but they'd try to keep it from happening

Coal ash is actually more radioactive than nuclear plant emissions:

I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

Wind isn't as clean as you think. And solar panels have toxic mercury.
