You've got to ask yourself, are the criminals going after these people because they're white and Afrikaans - as many seem to think - or simply because a white man likely has more in his home or wallet worth taking? Too many people here get shot during a casual mugging for anybody to take any risks whatever. Don't sleep with your windows unlocked. Never sleep without a loaded gun within reach. And never, ever, go downtown unless you can outrun every teenage track star from the city in your vellies.

If there are twelve Landies in the lot you can be certain that only two can go one hundred metres without breakdown. You'll get mugged at the door to the station. If you're a Boer or an Indian good luck with that mate, scream all you want into your mobile phone - they're not coming and if they do it'll only be to slop what's left of you into a tub.

That is why those South Africans who can afford it must hire their own police. Private security can be there in three minutes.
