North Korea actually have the moon right now so the Chinese astronauts can visit by train on a day trip. I'll be sure to ask them for some nice pictures and souvenirs from the superior North Korean gift shop that is stationed on the burnt remains of the US flag.

North Korea has probably already colonized Alpha Centuri.

With an oxygen supply and a match, why not?

I'm no expert or anything, but I would think with the extremely thin (nearly nonexistent) atmosphere of the moon, as soon as the oxygen left the tank it would spread out so rapidly and so thinly that you really couldn't maintain a fire long enough to burn a flag.

Great, more people advance our knowledge of the universe and the US is given an incentive to fund NASA again.

Well, their funding keeps getting cut by myopic politicians. Not only does NASA provide useful technologies, (and therefore new products for new industries) they contribute to our understanding of the universe... you cannot put a pricetag on such a thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_spin-off_technologies or check http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/nasacity/index2.htm for an interactive sampling

Damn it, NASA! We're still richer than they are, money isn't an excuse!

I actually love the idea of China doing more space stuff, because hopefully we'll get another space race, and, consequently, NASA getting off their butts.

Even if NASA weren't to do anything, we should still look at China going to moon as definitely being a good thing. The advancement of science is a great thing regardless of who is doing it.

Yes, they do need funding, but that would also be spurred by China reigniting the space race, since Congress would have another opportunity to "stick it to the commies".

Besides, it's not like NASA can't afford to do anything. They have the resources for a manned lunar mission (although it would take a few years at best). They just spend those resources on scientifically useful but decidedly unglamorous things like solar-radiation measuring and space-telescoping and so on instead.

Glad to see that they are almost capable of doing something the US did almost half a century ago.

Besides in this era of rapidly improving robotics the argument for manned space travel is rapidly being reduced to "because its cool". In the future that might change, but for now sending people into space for the sake of exploration is simply a waste of resources.

The moon is achievable and there's shit still to do there. Like, investigating the feasibility of mining Helium-3 and whatever other resources may lie within. Plus, the moon, responsible for much of our weather, could always do with more study.

The complexities of a manned Mars mission are too long to list.

Don't worry, it'll be the capitalists (literally, as in private ventures), not the commies, who'll reach Mars first. At this rate some of the more enterprising firms will have boots on Olympus Mons by the time NASA even has a capable spacecraft in the testing phase.
