Well OK the Seattle Times is wrong.
If they have a free shuttle, why do they bother running trains?
Oh, you mean free to passengers. Not free to the operator.
When you get off the train at the station before the stop with the problem there are a whole batch of angry MTA workers that are yelling service is suspended take the shuttle below and handing out little tickets. (If you want I will post a photo of one when I'm home). Since you already paid your fare, you are entitled to the full ride. You can only get on the shuttle w these tickets and they are only given out by the usually angry MTA employees inside the station

I mean, surely this didn't require closing down of entire NYC subway unless the kitten in question was product of strange breeding between horse and cat and using rail replacement service (if available) would cause delays of couple of minutes and what better excuse than "I am late to save a kitten"...
It wasn't the whole subway just the last few stops on 2 lines.

Think of a city with over 8 million residents. There are too damned many irresponsible people who don't spay/neuter, or who get pets without the clear idea of how much work is involved. They often buy from pet stores rather than adopt to begin with. They often abandon them on the street rather than bring them to a shelter or a no-kill shelter. With the huge numbers of animals coming into city shelters, they often have a week, if not days, to get adopted or put down because there's not enough room or resources to keep them.
It's a horrid thing, and I strongly encourage people to spay/neuter and to adopt pets rather than buy them, for just this reason.

I've never gotten an animal that wasn't a rescue. I don't believe it's moral to buy an animal from a breeder when there are hundreds of thousands of animals who're at risk of death because we can't care for them in shelters.

I got my Kat when she walked in the door and refused to leave.

I don't think you really need to point out that they're angry MTA workers, I think the understanding is that you have to have your anus clenched tighter than a croc's jaw to work there.
