That was sort of what I was referring to.

Also, if I hear another republican say "our party freed the slaves" I'm going to lose my mind.

Bragging about things they did in 1864 shows how lame they've become, what have they done for us lately.

Well, both you and I know it's inevitable a Republican will say that.

Those democrats must be proud about giving the US the modern interstate-highway system...oh wait.

Well, they made PRC from a left-wing totalitarian hellhole into a right-wing totalitarian hellhole.
And Reagan beat the crap out of every citizen of the Soviet Union with his right fist. Because he didn't like the left.

Just when I think that these maniacs would be gone for good, they start a strife about changing the name of a park. Joy.

What do you think would be the aftermath of this, NSG? Personally, I am worried that this would start something more significant. Just a nagging feeling, but still.

What makes you think the Klan ever went away? And a threat to a statue of General Forrest, well, he did found the first iteration of the Klan back in the 1860s, so yeah, they'd be kind of touchy.

In fairness Forrest moderated the Klan and disassociated with them later and became an advocate of racial equality and harmony. IF your going to put a confederate General on a statute he is a good candidate because he captures the notion that people can and do change.

Longstreet would've been a better choice for post-war change and harmony, IMO. Then again, he had reservations about the 'cause' to begin with.

Sadly, TV viewers seem to be. See: roughly one half of reality shows in the US lately.

Rednecks, the Kardashians, and gangsta rap.

Who honestly cares about the Klan anymore?

These days they are little more than a social club for racist idiots and their rallies are more funny than they are scary. If anyone who identifies themselves as an "Imperial Wizard" can do so with a straight face, they deserve to be laughed at.

Just the few times their robes caught on fire trying to light up a cross. Usually didn't last long though.

The main problem with Longstreet was he dared to question Lee. And post war Lee was considered a God in the South.

Honestly he was right in his criticisms of Lee, but because Longsteet was second to last in west point and Lee was second to first Lee was always going to be the Superior while they both served.

I've learned to replace all incidences of the word "Mississippi" with "Massachusetts." Same number of syllables, easier to spell, more politically sane, and they both begin with "M"!

And when you talk about the Klan in Massachusetts you get a lot more weird looks.

Lee's ego was his downfall. He got a big head from his early string of victories and felt himself and his men invulnerable, while Longstreet knew all too well they were in a precarious position at any particular time and was also, like his buddy Grant, well aware of the numbers game being played. Seems like a number of situations popped up during the ACW where those who graduated low in their classes at West Point trounced those who headed classes; probably has something to do with the rapidly changing methods of warfare, where those trying to follow the old, more rigid Napoleanic stylings were unable to counter strategies not covered in the classes.

The more I've studied the ACW, the more Lost Causers have irritated the hell out of me; not just because of demonizing men like Longstreet despite being some of their most effective leaders and best, albeit very slim, chances for success (What if Jackson had survived the war and gone on to support integration as well?), but because they ignored Lee's post-war activities and friendships while pretending to worship him. If he could only hear some of the fecal matter they've spewed about Grant or the re-union of the country in the past century and a half...

I guess Forrest fits into this to some extent too. His 'followers' ignore his last few years as if he had become a different person entirely, focusing on a narrowed snapshot of his existence to form their perfect hero.
