In fairness Forrest moderated the Klan and disassociated with them later and became an advocate of racial equality and harmony. IF your going to put a confederate General on a statute he is a good candidate because he captures the notion that people can and do change.

Longstreet would've been a better choice for post-war change and harmony, IMO. Then again, he had reservations about the 'cause' to begin with.

Honestly he was right in his criticisms of Lee, but because Longsteet was second to last in west point and Lee was second to first Lee was always going to be the Superior while they both served.

Lee's ego was his downfall. He got a big head from his early string of victories and felt himself and his men invulnerable, while Longstreet knew all too well they were in a precarious position at any particular time and was also, like his buddy Grant, well aware of the numbers game being played. Seems like a number of situations popped up during the ACW where those who graduated low in their classes at West Point trounced those who headed classes; probably has something to do with the rapidly changing methods of warfare, where those trying to follow the old, more rigid Napoleanic stylings were unable to counter strategies not covered in the classes.

The more I've studied the ACW, the more Lost Causers have irritated the hell out of me; not just because of demonizing men like Longstreet despite being some of their most effective leaders and best, albeit very slim, chances for success (What if Jackson had survived the war and gone on to support integration as well?), but because they ignored Lee's post-war activities and friendships while pretending to worship him. If he could only hear some of the fecal matter they've spewed about Grant or the re-union of the country in the past century and a half...

I guess Forrest fits into this to some extent too. His 'followers' ignore his last few years as if he had become a different person entirely, focusing on a narrowed snapshot of his existence to form their perfect hero.
