If Robin Thicke was aiming for feminist, he wouldn't have written a date-rape anthem.

Somehow I doubt that is one of his priorities, though.

According to him because he includes the line 'that man is not your maker' it's all okay.

I'll be sure to remember that when composing my own summer hit, "Blurred Property Lines," about how most black people totally want to be my slaves even though they might pretend otherwise. I'll put in a line about how "that whitey isn't your massa" in there some place and wait for all the praise for my progressive ideals!

I suggest putting on some padded mittens so the facepalm that's about to happen hurts less:

"I think that's what great art does -- it's supposed to stir conversation, it's supposed to make us talk about what's important and what the relationships between men and women are," Thicke added. "If you listen to the lyrics, it says, 'That man is not your maker.' It's actually a feminist movement within itself. It's saying that women and men are equals as animals and as power. It doesn't matter if you're a good girl or a bad girl, you can still have a good time."

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm sure he CLAIMED that sort of thing. It's the new hip thing among the pro-rape crowd, to insist that you are all about "sexual liberation" and you believe it's important to "take back the power" inherent in being a sex object that pleases heterosexual men.

Indeed. That quote still hurts my brain, though. I think the high point for me is where he implied that "Blurred Lines" is "great art." That or "women and men are equals as animals and as power," because I have no idea what the shit that's even supposed to mean. :p

Eh, I'm guessing it's just the same complimentarian crap we always hear: Men and women are totally equals, they're just different.*

*Differences between men and women include but are not limited to: women being dumber, weaker, more emotional, less capable, cowardly, helpless, catty, bitchy, naggy, slutty, gold-digging, and worthless after the age of 30. Men can expect to be viewed as less competent at the kinds of domestic chores that nobody wants to do anyways. Differences void in Vermont, Massachusetts, and the queer parts of California.

I always used to get irritated about stupid celebrities getting so much attention. It just seemed.... fundamentally unfair. What have these people done to deserve this attention? This was during a period of time when the Kardashians were rising stars.

I realized that they feed off negative energy as much as positive energy. You watch Miley Cyrus's videos, it doesn't matter if you hated it or liked it: she gets that advertising money either way.

Now I'm just ignoring them. Stupid celebrities like Cyrus don't get any of my attention, and I never consume their media. For the purposes of my life, it's like they don't even exist. It's my epic quest to make worthless celebrities fade into obscurity.

Sure Cyrus is creating sexual stereotypes, etc, but the only way to solve this is to ignore her (in my opinion).

It's not to my taste, even if the lyrics weren't icky, but I've got nothing against people finding it fun to listen to. One of the things I talk about a lot is the idea that it's really important to be able to separate "I like this work" and "this work is entirely without fault." So you can think it's catchy, you can like the hey-hey-hey part, you can enjoy dancing to it, AND you can recognize that "I know you want it, I know you want it, but you're a good girl" is a creepy-ass lyric. What doesn't work is claiming that it's really super feminist because "men and women are equals as animals and as power," not least because that does not even appear to be English as we know it.

Only if you take a narrow on/off view of things.

People will always like looking at what they're attracted to. Gay dudes like looking at dudes, straight women like looking at men, etc etc to varying degrees down to zero I guess, I don't know how that would work but I'm sure someone one the internet will call me out for not including it and I don't have to understand everything to acknowledge it exists.

And there will always be people who enjoy being looked at.

The problem arises when that starts to inform social norms, expectations, and practices. When we're in situations not relevant to the phenomenon, or we weigh that desire to look unevenly or inappropriately especially down gender lines, it's kind of worth calling out. It's not about hating sex or attraction or arousal, just in how we use that to attach value to an individual or a gender.

So you can't win.

Emeli Sandé is another who isn't really sexualized.

It seems to be a kind of pattern. Female artist releases song, everybody talks about her body, so the female artist goes on to play to what she thinks people care about her.

Ellie Goulding almost gets away with it too. Almost.

Indeed. Frankly, there's a lot of problematic lyrics in catchy songs, and it's not just limited to the rapey ones. For instance, "Single Ladies" is many flavors of stupid from a feminist standpoint, but that doesn't stop it from being catchy as hell.

I've got Def Leppard on my MP3 player, so I think it should be clear that I give precisely zero fucks about music snobbery. Nothing wrong with selecting music based on what has a beat to which one can dance, and not based on any serious analysis of the lyrics or musical value...so long as one admits this. If someone else comes along and wants to have a discussion about the lyrical or melodic merits of a given playlist, then either engage on those terms or excuse yourself politely. No need to get snotty and defensive about it.
