What. Despite all the differences (and the racist implications of comparing modern urban blacks to a bunch of tribal herders or hunter gatherers) just the idea that everyone must think everything is equal is just strange. I really don't see the problem with being weirded out and thinking something else in another culture is stupid is a bad thing, unless you're a fucking anthropologist

Is it "culturally insensitive" for me to think that Shariah law is backwards?

Never did I do that.

"perhaps an Indigenous nation, or a nomadic group on a steppe on another continent"

This sort of implies a general backwardsness, not to mention that this is an activity which comes from a modern idea of a nation rather than a tribal group

Probably according to the NDP, but I digress...

I don't see it, I don't see how comparing it to a people who haven't discovered farming yet to an urban culture in a post industrial nation isn't a bit insulting

Given that twerking is a product of my own culture (American popular culture), I'd say that I fully understand it and can therefore call it stupid.

How is this not racist? You are looking at a dance done by some black people in America, and saying it is now part of "Black culture" and that they are an entirely different people from white people.

.... Where do you people get this shit?

People, it's not necessarily cultural appropriation if people from that culture are freely sharing with someone from the outside. That's just the truth.

It's ok. Miley Cyrus has a black friend so she can't possibly send problematic messages or propagate harmful stereotypes. Guess that settles it! I mean, no black men have ever propagated white supremacism implicitly or explicitly in history, right? That never happens. Ever.

Is she sending problematic messages and propagating harmful stereotypes? Hell yes. But not all the ones you think she's sending.

Nothing she did on that stage had any racial connotations. Its NOT racist. In fact, claiming its racist, is racist in and of itself. So stop with your attempt at cultural segregation.

This. Calling twerking stupid is no different than telling somebody who can't handle their booze that they shouldn't drink.

Anyways, you can knock Twerking all you want to, it's still a super fun dance and along with being completely harmless, it's expressive. I love it.

This is surely intentional.

You are comparing talking about a dance done by some black people in America, along with people of other races, with a tribal dance done by a primitive group of nomads. That's racist. You, and your ilk are then going on to say that twerking done by a white person is "cultural appropriation" meaning that it is somehow part of "black culture" to dance in a sexual and provocative way, meaning that part of the identity of being black is being overtly sexual, again racist. You are then saying that white people have no way to understand black culture, meaning black people are radically different from white people, again racist.

Get it now?

It is harmless. But I can still say that it is extremely annoying and really not that great of dance.

The Bernie ranks higher than twerking.

Maybe I am responding to people - and I actually was typing a response - but the snarky response made me change my mind.

Isn't your definition of cultural appropriation very arbitrary? I mean a bit of a google suggests that it originates to a certain sub-culture, namely Southern Hip hop and New Orleans particularly. Depending on the description you want to use has either spread to, or been culturally appropriated by, by artists not from that sub-culture.

Surely it is just as much cultural appropriation for New York, or LA black artists to take it from its Southern roots as it is for a white artist to use it.

Never have I felt so aged and out of the loop...when I was in high school, in my profoundly white Jewish suburb, we called this style of movement "booty dancing." When several students engaged in said booty dancing at our Spring Fling, the shocked chaperons escorted them out and commanded the DJ to switch to a nice safe line-dancing playlist.
