Putin could have vetoed the homophobic statute - why didn't he? It's quite disturbing.
Also, cute image, but perhaps he could show that kind of care for the LGBT kids in Russia who are being marginalized and discriminated against as a result of these homophobic policies causing homophobia to flare up there.

The confrontational approach will not win over the hearts and minds of the Russian people, which is the key foundation to them accepting the LGBT as equals (a la the same process the US went through in the late 80s/90s).
If you recall the whole PUSSY RIOT saga, what ever their cause was - it was completely marginalised after they disrespected the Orthodox church. Similarly denouncing Russia as fascist, Nazi etc - Putin a madman, tyrant etc - does not help the Russian LGBT community.
That's the approach US Republicans take, it shouldn't be the path the US LGBTs follow.

And a Russian gay rights activist may be facing the first charges under the Russian federal ban: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2013/09/02/russia-first-person-to-be-convicted-under-anti-gay-propaganda-law-arrested-by-his-own-parents/
And in other news, even more protests (in addition to the already many protests which have took place such as in London and Berlin) against the homophobic policies are to be held in dozens of cities around the world, from Buenos Aires to Melbourne: http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/world-calls-end-russias-anti-gay-laws030913
I imagine the G20 may very well (most certainly a majority of G20 nations) issue a statement condemning the homophobic policies while in Russia. That would add to the condemnations already issued by international human rights organizations, European institutions, as well as the United Nations. The UN statement even makes clear that it is homophobia which is the real problem - http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/un-demands-russia-repeal-gay-propaganda-law190813.
And in other now well known news (as reported by the Guardian as a headline story in its global print edition), gay teens in Russia are being severely marginalized as backward sentiments have been flared up by the homophobic policies.

Do you think any criticism of Russia is having a 'cold war mentality'? Should we be forbidden from criticizing Russia lest we offend your oh-so-delicate feelings?

Maybe I was expecting too much from LGBT people to refrain from acting like bigots?

It is not gay marriage that is in discussion (and it won in Brazil being the minority thing and no one complained). Don't be some edgy near-fascist with pride in ignorance over minority issues for once in your comments, please.
