Apparently President Obama may be meeting with gay rights activists during the G20 summit in Russia: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2013/09/02/obama-to-meet-gay-russian-activists-while-in-st-petersburg-for-g20/

And a Russian gay rights activist may be facing the first charges under the Russian federal ban: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2013/09/02/russia-first-person-to-be-convicted-under-anti-gay-propaganda-law-arrested-by-his-own-parents/

And in other news, even more protests (in addition to the already many protests which have took place such as in London and Berlin) against the homophobic policies are to be held in dozens of cities around the world, from Buenos Aires to Melbourne: http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/world-calls-end-russias-anti-gay-laws030913

I imagine the G20 may very well (most certainly a majority of G20 nations) issue a statement condemning the homophobic policies while in Russia. That would add to the condemnations already issued by international human rights organizations, European institutions, as well as the United Nations. The UN statement even makes clear that it is homophobia which is the real problem - http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/un-demands-russia-repeal-gay-propaganda-law190813.

And in other now well known news (as reported by the Guardian as a headline story in its global print edition), gay teens in Russia are being severely marginalized as backward sentiments have been flared up by the homophobic policies.

You just have to know how to deal with Putin to get through to him.

It's disappointing to see so many pro-LGBT comments on twitter resorting to the Cold War mentality-type insults about Russia because of this.

Putin could have vetoed the homophobic statute - why didn't he? It's quite disturbing.

Also, cute image, but perhaps he could show that kind of care for the LGBT kids in Russia who are being marginalized and discriminated against as a result of these homophobic policies causing homophobia to flare up there.

Is it bad to want the phrase "Better dead than red" to come back because of this?

The confrontational approach will not win over the hearts and minds of the Russian people, which is the key foundation to them accepting the LGBT as equals (a la the same process the US went through in the late 80s/90s).

If you recall the whole PUSSY RIOT saga, what ever their cause was - it was completely marginalised after they disrespected the Orthodox church. Similarly denouncing Russia as fascist, Nazi etc - Putin a madman, tyrant etc - does not help the Russian LGBT community.

That's the approach US Republicans take, it shouldn't be the path the US LGBTs follow.

Perhaps, but that approach has been tried.

And that incident has nothing to do with gay rights organizations in anyway.

The international community and officials have made clear to Russia that it is in violation of its obligations under international law in an informative manner - surely that a non-confrontational approach?

To add to what I've said already (regarding the G20, etc - see the top of this page of the thread), it seems that the Prime Minister Cameron will be raising the issue as well: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2013/09/03/foreign-office-confirms-david-cameron-will-raise-russian-anti-gay-laws-with-putin-at-g20/; http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/david-cameron-challenge-putin-russia%E2%80%99s-anti-gay-laws030913

The prediction seems fairly likely to come true.

Yeah, don't criticize , you might 'disappoint' some random guy on an internet forum! Seriously, how is opposing anti-gay laws having a 'cold war mentality'? Do you think any criticism of Russia is having a 'cold war mentality'? Should we be forbidden from criticizing Russia lest we offend your oh-so-delicate feelings?

He's a Serb, the West already offended his feelings over Kosovo, so he's fairly immune to whatever offence you might cause to his feelings. What he's saying, is that things like boycotting the Olympics, aren't going to get your point across. Intelligent protests and debate, are.

Russia is refinding its spiriturality after decades of atheist rule. 84% of the nations people are against gay marriage. The majority speaks for itself. 8/10 Russians don't want gay marriage. No leader in their right mine would anger that 84%.

It is not gay marriage that is in discussion (and it won in Brazil being the minority thing and no one complained). Don't be some edgy near-fascist with pride in ignorance over minority issues for once in your comments, please.

Problem is not about opposing, I'm talking about the way in which individuals are opposing.

Maybe I was expecting too much from LGBT people to refrain from acting like bigots?

I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

You can be Spiritual and support Gay Marriage! All in one!

I will be heavily following Olympic hockey, as I always do.

Perhaps the current issues in Russia will lead to a more intense rivalry? The suppression of gays and the Snowden thing angered quite a few Americans. So who knows?

Either way, the Ruskies are gonna get hosed (on the ice that is).
