If the GOP suddenly becomes favorable to gay marriage that would likely be the same reason as Putin doing what he's doing in Russia. It's all about the votes.

As for the GOP, their voter ploy would at least be less reprehensible since it would result in a net increase in liberty. Putin's is doubly reprehensible because it's a blatant political ploy and results in a severe decrease in liberty.
