No. Neither is the UAE. And as pointed out by Avenio, the Human Rights Council has repeatedly criticised both nations on related grounds.

Here're the signatories:

Hopefully they go after all of them. It's not just "Western" nations though, look at how much flak China and North Korea have gotten. All in all we need to make sure everyone allows asylum seekers a chance to gain asylum and decent human rights, even if they didn't sign an agreement they need to abide by it as they don't get a choice in the matter as to who gets to have human rights and who doesn't

Repeatedly and sternly, I might add. The reason it doesn't make the news anymore is that, well, it's not news anymore. Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states have been despotic hellholes for decades now, and the UNCHR has been criticizing them for decades.

Having a first world country get criticized by the UNCHR, though? That's new (ish), and definitely not a good thing.

The Australian asylum policy is... cause for concern. The Australia-PNG Regional Resettlement Arrangement violates both Australia's international obligations as well as basic human rights. The attempt at shifting responsibility away from Australia is worthy of condemnation in itself.

As for the cases at hand more specifically: While the criticism of the Human Rights Committee carry limited weight on the world stage, they're correct on this one.

The reason why the Gulf is still the cesspool it is is because its allies have been giving them good immunity before the United Nations.

The UN is capable of multitasking, you know, and worse violations elsewhere do not reduce the violations here. Assuming, of course, that North Korea signed the thing.

Well they sort of do, all the time. This thread is just about one of many reports released by various international groups.

Actually, we agreed to let them in when we signed the Convention relating to the status of refugees in 1954. We said that we'd take them in, that we'd treat them humanely and that we'd give them a fair go....and we're breaking all three promises we voluntarily made.

That whole "we decide who comes here and how" bullshit doesn't fly in the face of commitments we, as a nation, chose to make.

That is an easy fix, as per Articles 42 and 56 of the Vienna conventions Australia Denounces and abrogates the treaty.

Though even without that commitments are worth less than the paper they are written on if the international community is unwilling to enforce it.

This was 50 years ago. Yemen has failed to progress at all in that time, and is in many ways worse, but at the time they were fairly typical of the region.

Bingo!

Anyway, I really hope that Australia deals with this in a constructive manner, since it could provide us with leverage to change Israel's policies towards the Sudanese/Eritreans here. And conversely, if Australia ignores this, it will provide ammunition to the ethnocrats here who want us to lock all the black (and non-Jewish) people up in the middle of the desert indefinitely, and not even make the pretense of adjudicating their claims.
