As a resident of Charleston, South Carolina, I can most certainly say that few times have I encountered racism since I moved to the area around a year ago. Charleston has a high notoriety for being one of the most friendly cities in America (if not too pushy a bout it). Anyone who is really seen as a racist in our community is usually shunned from many and is seen as someone desperately trying to hold onto a past they never experienced.

I will say this though, North Charleston has the largest crime rate in all of South Carolina with an even balance of white and blacks living together. Me and most of my friends joke about how we're lucky to get through North Charleston without getting stabbed. Many of the "worlds dumbest crimes" you read about, have taken place North Charleston because of an incredibly low graduation rate.

I can give a safe bet that this man was probably racist or at the least bias, but look at the outrage which it caused him! its not like we are having a critical racial problem! If there was no care for racial tension in our community this story wouldn't have made it past the local news! This man gets every bit of the attention because it only hurts him more if people care about the story. Modern Charlestoners don't like racism one bit; its only the people with the least amount of brain that do the most amount of talking.

This doesn't apply to Private place or land.

Technically, while there may have been many white people in that restaurant, far more than 25, the ratio of African-Americans to confirmed racists was 25:1 at that time. So really, the guy who had them kicked out was a minority.

Because it's a a commonplace occurrence in South Carolina and Old South my grandparents are actually in the Midwest and would have been around 6 at in 1953 but still nice BTTF reference.

SC is an awful place. The looks on the faces of people there, both black and white, is depressing. They seem angry, downhearted, and generally unpleasant. Contrast this with two neighbors, GA and NC, similar histories, similar demographics, but a whole different attitude.
