I can also bring as source the book "Escape from Camp 14", the story of a person living in a dictatorship in the dictatorship, i.e. a concentration camp for political prisoners and their sons and grandsons in North Korea.

Isn't that just the story of one of many refugees? I don't really think that's an academic source.

Far from the truth. The majority of the country is too scared to say "no" to it's leaders.

It's overwhelmingly to do with concern for their loved ones back home. But some defectors have noted that North Korea has a much more communal, "pull together" culture, even if it's born from the people's struggles rather than the state's propaganda.

This is a remarkable step forward for the North. No taxes, legal marijuana, a wide range of different haircuts to choose from... this place is getting more libertarian by the minute. :P

And those are some very 80s hairstyles.

South Korea used to have restrictions on hair styles and clothing as well until at least the dictatorship of Chun Doo-hwan.

It is the story of a refugee, but there are inter-chapters in which the author explains some general facts about North Korea.

Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

Haha, this is all actually old news, from before Kim Jong-un took power.

The country's liberalized a bit more under him, like the legalization of pizza/hamburgers/platform shoes/etc, although I don't know about haircuts.
