Elizabeth Warren 2016?

Postby Vitius » Thu Aug 15, 2013 8:57 pm

Yes, this is probably the second '[insert bland political figure here] 2016' thread you've seen tonight, as the Jesse 2016 thread made me think of coming up with a thread for a better political figure.

Obviously Democrats will go for positioning Clinton for the presidency provided that she runs, but a lot can happen between now and 2016. Hillary is 65 now; in 2016, if you can do the math, she'll be near 70. I don't wish for anything bad to happen to her, of course, though a stroke or other medical trauma could jeopardize her campaign if she decides to run (the public would likely not want to elect a figure that couldn't fully serve the country) or just prevent her from running at all. Of course, that's not to say that Clinton and the best other option are far-apart in age (just a year); still, it's just speculation on what could happen that would prevent Clinton from running.

So who would be the best option for the Democrats? Elizabeth Warren!

1) Not to be sexist, but for a number of reasons (the public wanting to elect a figure in history, a likely strong carry of the female vote, etc.), it's likely Warren's gender will boost her above other candidates. I find it very unlikely that the Republican Party will nominate a female candidate, especially considering that one comes off as completely batshit crazy to most voters (Bachmann) and the other was a factor in not only crashing the 2008 McCain run, but driving off the highway and doing flaming flips throughout the air.

2) Warren has a pretty good political record, regardless of whether it's BS or not: Serves the people against the corporations, is tough but charming. She is an avid consumer protector, helping with the establishment of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Besides serving as a senator, she also served as an Assistant to the President.

3) Public approval? Warren did pretty well in 2012 polls during the Massachusetts election (http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls ... -2093.html)! Though I like Obama (like, not love), it may help to have a president with some financial experience, and I feel that such could be emphasized in a way similar to Republicans pointing out Romney's financial experience. While she is pretty far from being the average consumer and American in terms of wealth, as any politician is, I feel that she certainly has a certain likability factor and can be seen as a champion for the worker/consumer.

What are your thoughts? Do you think Warren could beat her Republican counterpart? Admittedly, I like her more than Hillary, but the Democratic Party wouldn't nominate her as opposed to Clinton. If Clinton doesn't run for 2016, Warren would be a great candidate.

She's too far left for the "moderates" of America.

I can honestly say that I hope she does run in 2016. I'm Fiscally Conservative, but even Warren grabs my attention like no one else has been able to in a long time. She causes an internal conflict for me, but I think she has what this country needs for a REAL turn-around, not this superficial turn-around that we're experiencing now.

The sad fact is she probably won't run.

Warren vs Huntsman would be an interesting match up.

Warren is way too economically left for me.
I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

I agree that Warren is the kind of person we need in charge of this country. But unless there's some kind of major meltdown/implosion/hair-gel-shortage, she's too far left for the American electorate.

Besides, she do more in the Senate crafting our nation's laws anyway, so that's where she should stay.

This caught me as a little odd though.

Warren voted as a Republican for many years saying, "I was a Republican because I thought that those were the people who best supported markets." She states that in 1995 she began to vote Democratic because she no longer believed that to be true, but she says that she has voted for both parties because she believed that neither party should dominate.

Well, we've had varying degrees of rightist economic policies ever since Reagan shifted the balance to the right. It's worth giving a true leftist a try, since they just might be able to solve some of the problems that the hard-line rightist politicians cannot solve.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I would vote for a Sanders-Warren or a Warren-Sanders ticket any day. Left or right, they are some of the few who stand up to the corrupt, corporate BS in Congress. Sadly, while I generally agree with both of them on most issues, I think they're both too left-wing to win over the moderates and would unfortunately stand little to no chance against whoever their opponents would turn out to be, and that's not even taking into consideration the crap the corrupt establishment would throw at them to try to discredit them.

We saw this with Ron Paul in '12 -- while I'm not a fan of many of his domestic policies, I do respect the way he stood up to the corporate interests, who are the real bad guys in this show. And, of course, few people took him seriously, he was not given a fair amount of attention by the media, and the monied powers that be did everything possible to make him into a joke, which was really quite a feat, given who he was running against.

Depends on who the Republicans nominate. If they go with someone like Romney/McCain, she can take the presidency, and be the first woman elected to the American Presidency.

Yeah, but if they just keep saying she's too left wing for 'middle America' then eventually people will just believe it to be true without ever being able to identify a single position she has.
