Atheism and Misogyny

Postby The Parkus Empire » Mon Aug 12, 2013 12:45 am

Now, is it just me, or is the atheist "movement" associating itself more and more with anti-feminism? Three popular figureheads of the movement, Bill Maher, Dawkins, Amazing Atheist, have all expressed misogynist attitudes. Has anyone else noticed this trend amongst anti-theists? Is atheism being appropriated for male empowerment?

Input, please.

EDIT: To clarify, I mean the anti-theist movement, which is unfortunately labeled as the "atheist" movement by the mainstream, and even anti-theists themselves.

It's not.

It's the loudest of the loud and the extremist of the extreme that are giving it a bad name, like pretty much anything else.

There is no atheist movement. I don't respect Bill Maher or Richard Dawkins as atheist leaders and I really wish people would stop pretending atheists are some kind of group other than being a statistic.

No, most atheists are in fact pro-equality.

I believe the actual movement is called "New Atheism".

If they are, it is nothing to do with atheism. They may just be bitter old men.

Only famous, 'leader' atheists show extreme misogyny.

These 'leader' atheists are also typically assholes, due to the fact they think they're leaders.

I'd assume they mean, provide examples of misogynous statements from Rich Dick Dawkins and Bill Maher.

I didn't know anti-feminism = misogyny. Seems to me like there's a lot of confusion over simple semantics.

It's not hard to find such examples. They're both pretty outspoken with their views, particularly Maher. The fallacy in the OP's argument isn't that they're misogynists, but that they're somehow representative of atheists.

I disagree. I find him obnoxious, overly aggressive with his views, at times dogmatic, and, as the OP says, misogynistic.

Being critical of feminism is not the same as being misogynistic.

I've certainly seen the last one being both (as a result of NSG) mind. Don't think I actually ended up posting in that thread as a result. (The link is actually for "misogynistic" but it may be critical of feminism as well, I don't remember it for that.)

I believe the Dawkins bit is best described as an internet spat with a woman. Never heard of the other guy.

Uhmmm... Yeah, if you are truly anti-feminism, then you are a misogynist.

Both religious and atheist forces have idiots that do these things. They don't represent the moderate guys that do/don't believe in God or some mystical beings. I'm Catholic but I'm ashamed by Rick Sanctorum wanting to put religion into everything just like you're ashamed with Bill Maher
