I just thought we lack such a thread since we have one for Jews and Christians. :p So, the Muslim members on NS can gather here.

I'm not a Muslim myself though, but I come from an Alevi family.

Yes, the first topic should be whether music is halal or haram.

Dislike a lot of the religion itself. More neutral on the actual members.

I am a kafir, but I thoroughly respect all Muslim women who choose to wear the hijab in post-911 America. I am proud of them because they stand firm in their beliefs.

It seems the poll has been sabotaged by some trolls.

And I appreciate Muslim women who refuse to wear hijab. Hopefully all of them will realize one day that it's nothing but just an ancient Arab tradition that is not even mentioned in Qur'an.

Hadia Tajik can be a good role model for Muslim women.

I knew it'd happen. You really shouldn't have included a terrorist option. Genuine sympathies. (I didn't vote for any since i'm not a muslim.)

Meh,I never had any problem with muslims but I highly dislike their moralistic conservatism. ...It is their undeniable right though to practice it.

The outcome certainly looks weird. You'd think that lot would have already blocked themselves.
Non of the persons I see above me have ever struck me as particularly Wahhabic.

But look at the Sunni side of things, this thread could lead to an interesting discussion.

Well, there are considerable people who follow that sect, mostly Saudi Arabians. So, I couldn't ignore this.

I agree with that, too. I appreciate either. I don't really think that a hijab is degrading, though. It's just a little outdated.

Damn, I was planning to make this thread. Oh well, when this one inevitably implodes from the clusterfuck of Islamists and Islamophobes battling it out, I call dibs on the next one. I've even thought up a great name for it: Islam Discussion Thread II: Kaaba Boogaloo.

I guess I'll break into a question. There's been a recent rise in converts to Islam in Europe. Though the bigger trend points to a decrease in religiousness, it appears that the smaller percentage of youths that follow a faith are picking up Islam. Does anyone have any strong feelings on this matter? What would the impact of this new trend be on European society, if anything at all?

Well, we killed christianities legitimacy by mocking it over centuries and pointing out it's absurdities.
Islam is new(ish, this wave at least.) here. You'll pick up some followers, and then we'll whittle down that religion too.
It doesn't bother me what colour the invisible unicorn is, it's still an invisible unicorn.
So, as you said, the bigger trend is toward atheism. I view this as a positive, and don't particularly care which theism picks up off others.

As for what effect this will have on Islam, it depends on the type of converts. Some will likely be of the variety that wants to be holier than thou to prove their Islamic credentials to compensate for their europeanness. These will, hopefully, be a minority, and what we'll instead see is a europeanized version of islam. (I.E, utterly indistinguishable from the europeanized christianity except you say allah instead and go to mosque maybe 3 times a year.)

I think it's interesting to note the at least in Britain, it was a majority of women who actually converted. The western media usually paints Islam as anti-women, so I'm a little surprised. If anything I think this new wave of Muslims could help boost the influence and visibility of the non-asshole interpretation of Islam that's been suffering ever since 9/11.

What would be an absurdity you think pundits could level at Islamic theology? Especially if Islamic culture in Europe becomes more liberal and compatible with Western values?

The religious claims are the absurdities, essentially. Also your stats fail to take into account the fact that, sadly, a lot of the conversions from women were due to marriage and their new families basically insisting.
British people aren't really very religious, so saying "Oh ok im a muslim now." is fairly easy for them.

Well, someone had to make this thread sunnah or later.
