Believe me; the Middle East couldn't have been in a less shitty state without Islam. This religion is just unlucky. There are some parts of the world other than the Middle East where Islam is practiced beautifully.

In fact if the history I know it to be believed, in the "Golden Age of Islam," Islam fueled great discoveries and several societal advances that actually made Islamic countries very nice to live in, at least for the time period. If it hadn't been for the people in power using Islam to fuck it all up then the religion could have had a much nicer connotation and the countries could have been very good examples of societal progress, had those trends continued.
