Seeing as we have discussions on Christianity and Judaism going on, I thought a thread to discuss aspects of the third in the list of Abrahamic religions was in order.

Lets us talk Islam. As a Westerner and a person that didn't grow up Muslim, I've always been curious of those who practice Islam. This thread's intention is to discuss the religion, the ways of life and why some choose to convert to it. It's is to discuss the Shia and the Sunni, Sufism, or anything related to Islam. Everything. It's, well, an Islam discussion. =)

It is not, however, intended to belittle Muslim people or to insult them. We can disagree, of course. But let us try to keep it civil. With this in mind, Muslim and non Muslim alike, shall we begin?

I read Peter Manseau saying that at the heart of it all its the veneration of relics. One group venerates relics while the other abhors them. I don't think that's all there is to it, though.

Was Aisha (one of Mohammed's wives) Sunni or Shia?

From what I know (take it with a grain of salt, I don't care about any sect as I do not classify myself into a sect and do not give a shit)
Sunni's believe only the Holy Prophet pbuh was infallible and that hadiths should be followed. When the Prophet pbuh dies they handed power to an elected Caliph.
Whereas Shiites believe that the Caliphs were not the rightful leaders, but it should have been passed down to the Prophet's pbuh cousin Ali bin Abu Talib, and that Imams are chosen by the current Imam. And they also believe that those Imams (i.e. starting with Ali bin Abu Talib and continuing on through the line of chosen Imams) are sinless and infallible. Sunni's view this to be idolatry and equating Imams with the Prophet pbuh, and that it is blasphemy.

She ra was neither, for as long as the Prophet pbuh lived. And we don't know what she chose but imo she ra was probably Sunni, because the Sunni believe she was the Prophet's pbuh favorite wife while the Shia hate her. Not sure why though.

Shiites and Sunnis are very similar with very minor differences. Shiites just believe that Ali was meant to be the first Caliph and that only the people descended from the Prophet Mohammed Peace Be Upon Him are meant to rule the Muslims. While Sunnis believe that anyone regardless of blood can be the leader. However we are not supposed to separate ourselves based on sect we are all Muslims period. That's how it is, every Muslim is the brother or sister of every other Muslim and between them there will be equality regardless of race.

Ah. Like I said I don't care about their sectarian nonsense, so when a Shia told me that they did not like Aisha ra then I just accepted that they didn't like her and went about my day.

We don't restrict the Christian thread to Christians (ask Menassa, Knox, and GnI), we don't restrict the Jewish thread to Jews, and we're not going to restrict the Islam thread to Muslims.

I voted "Bad" for couple main reasons. None of my opinions are belittling or what not. My opinions derive from my extensive study of the Quran (Muslim holy book) as well as living in a country with a 100% Muslim population for 10 years as well as a country with a 60% Muslim population for 5 years.

1) Mohamed (their leader) is a hypocrite:
married/slept with a 6 year old (what does that make him? starts with the letter "P"), was a warlord, using his sword against those who refused to convert; personally killing 400 Jewish men and boys (what does that make him? starts with the letter "M").

2) Deceitful:
Claims to be "the" religion of peace but contains 109 verses justifying attacking, killing, terrorizing and enslaving non-muslims. More verses justifying the killing of apostates (those who leave islam), homosexuals, adulterers and so on. Justifies lying, deceiving non-muslims in order to spread islam (like saying it's a religion of peace...ironically).

And for those who are going to say that I read wrong because of translation, well I read it in Arabic, which I speak fluently.

None of what I said is bias, it is offensive because I am shedding light on it, but once again, not bias. I am readying to provide proof for what I said with the verses from the Quran as well as its' context.
