Desocia wrote:I have sat down and thought about this for hours on end with no conclusion. I am an atheist but it is hard for my brain to register that all humans completely cease to exist when they die. It is easy to believe that when you die, you go to some magical world but I think that is a illogical way of thinking and understanding things. It is very unknown whether or not such a place exists and I think that is what scares me. I don't think anyone has a good understanding of what happens when a person dies, but I am going to throw it out there for NSG to discuss.

What happens after you die? Is there some sort of after life or do you completely cease to exist forever? Do you reincarnate into another living thing? Are scared to die?

Physically speaking we don't necessarily cease to exist completely. People have the tendency to assume that just because the body is no longer well the shape or form of a body anymore that we are indeed having ceased to exist. I use to be troubled by what happens when you die as well, and probably rather hilarious but I watched a documentary one day talking about stars and it was actually really comforting in a strange way. We are made up of atoms, on the atomic level we don't really just cease existing, the documentary talked about how stars were formed and how they practically created most of what we see in the universe, and in that we are as humans basically made up of atoms that most likely existed in a star some billions of years ago.

Physically speaking, it was comforting in the fact that all though our bodies after a century or so will definitely not be bodies [dust or if that for that matter] the very atoms that make up our structure will continue to live in the planet and the universe. [Til it ceases to actually exist... :? if that happens I should say, scientists bickering are always entertaining, I digress though.] Now, it then comes to whether or not a ''soul'' exist in a human being and what happens to it. Spiritually or Philosophically thinking can really decide how you view this ''soul''--Especially since taking the former route, then there is some kind of afterlife, where the latter can be afterlife or some kind of harmonic and optimistic way at looking at the end of your life.

Me personally, I don't believe in the afterlife in the way that we would be conscious of such [we're dead] what makes us who we are following the scientific route rests in the brain, and the brain like every other organ indeed dies eventually. Consciousness in ourselves will cease to exist as our brain begins to wind down, though it is very possible that in those few seconds or so, you could relive your entire life, or see some kinda light and go into a dream state before it finally shuts down. So essentially, you wouldn't know you were dead or about to be dead in those quick seconds [or even microseconds]

As per afterlife for me, I'll cease to exist within a hundred years, having ran out at the end of my time, but I know in physical terms everything that makes up me is recycled back into the fabric of the universe, while the memories of me will still live on in my children's children's children or what not, and that's what I find comforting as strange as that probably sounds.

Well, if I was catholic and let's say Dante's Inferno is indeed a fact. And God gave me the choice to go to heaven or not, I'd like to be in Limbo. Sit down and talk with Aristotle, Plato and the ruff, I would love that for eternity. :)

In other words, no one.
"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."—former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded ultra-progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a balanced attitude towards humanity in general.

Your attitudes towards economics appear neither committedly capitalist nor socialist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a liberal.

To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a sensible realistic egalitarian with several strong convictions.
