Perhaps I should clarify. You see, your heart stopping does not mean that you are dead. You're not dead until you're warm and dead, as the medical saying goes. Brain death is death. Brain damage is not.

When I'm dead I won't be around to care about it, so I don't see why I should care now seeing as in neither possible situation is it relevant.

I do quite like existing, but I doubt I could complain much about nonexisting. Plus I'm holding out hope for the human race figuring out immortality before I would normally die.

The whole messy affair of immortal souls migrating to the afterlife is almost certainly incorrect.

Everything that makes you who you are is a purely physical function. It's all physics, the neurochemistry of your brain is the medium of your consciousness, just as much as computer hardware is the medium of a computer's OS and various programs.

You don't ask whether there's some nonphysical "soul" that leaves your computer when you turn it off. Why do you wonder if there's a soul that departs your body when you get turned off?

There's no room for the soul in modern neurology. Not in any of the Abrahamic religious senses, anyway.

I have sat down and thought about this for hours on end with no conclusion. I am an atheist but it is hard for my brain to register that all humans completely cease to exist when they die. It is easy to believe that when you die, you go to some magical world but I think that is a illogical way of thinking and understanding things. It is very unknown whether or not such a place exists and I think that is what scares me. I don't think anyone has a good understanding of what happens when a person dies, but I am going to throw it out there for NSG to discuss.
