After reaching information-theoretic death, everything that defined your personality/memories/sentience/consciousness, etc would permanently cease to function. Outside of the concept of a "soul", there would be no reason to believe that anything metaphysical would actively occur to your consciousness.
You would not be able to tell you were not existing anymore mentally. It is not some kind of "void" or sensory-deprived feeling of paralyzation, as some seem to believe.

Once ways of replicating a person's brain atleast physically or in some kind of computational-based state are developed, then there might not necessarily need to be a worry about losing everything that defined you. Of course, it would be like replicating a harddrive with the same data. You have two harddrives with the same data -- both function the same, yet are physically seperate. Then you get into the debates about is the person replicated really you, etc.

i don't know if the phrasing of the question was intentional. certainly the more interesting question, and the one more people are likely to conclude was intended to be asked, is what do WE, individually experience, when our physical form ceases to function, and thus ceases to provide a home, or connection to physical existence, for our nonphysical awareness.

all answers to this latter, are of course, for the most part speculative.
even the claim of complete and perminent ceasation of awareness, is also speculative and unprovable, as the true nature of our awareness is itself unprovable.

i can only offer my own speculation, with which some beliefs may agree, and others not.

and that is that at some random place, on some random world, on which sapient life exist, an infant will be born, at some random point in time, after our physical demise here, who will, in every practical sense, again be, ourselves. in all probability, with little or no reason, at first, to even suspect, the existence of past lives.

it is even possible, that some, completely nonphysical setting may exist, that is in some what experienced between physical lives.

as the infant grows into a child, and later adolescence and adulthood, they may or may not become aware of inclinations and limitations, inhierent in their perceptions, having no obvious origin in their present lives. these, i am inclined to suspect, are a legacy of previous lives, which intern leads me to the speculation, that death is no more eternal then life.

as for the elaborate claims of 'afterlives' and what takes place in them, rewards and punishments and eternity, i can perceive no other basis for their invention, then the hope that such beliefs will prompt people, to be more considerate toward each other, and to the kind of world their actions, create for each other, in the here and now, to have to live in.

As for my own take on the subject, I'd guess that your brain shuts down and your consciousness ceases to exists, but perhaps it's more complicated than that. As we know, time is relative depending on the observer, so perhaps time will slow down from your own point of perception as your brain shuts down, making those moments of your death last infinitely, where you experience the sensation of your brain as it is gradually being deprived of oxygen.

As a body, decomposition takes some time. So does cremation.

No. It's just a simple fact of life, it can happen to any one. You win - you lose, it's a chance you have to take with life. Oh yeah - I was alive, but now you say it's over and I'm falling apart, yeah yeah, it's a hard life...

I don't really know, I presume nothing; the concept of nothing is difficult to comprehend, to fathom a state of "nothing" is hard for me.
I greatly dislike the unknown, and nothingness, hence why I generally avoid considering what happens after death.
I would still say "nothing", in a heartbeat, however.

EDIT: I mean nothing as in consciousness, or afterlife. Not as in physcial processes, because that's quite obvious.
