Berlusconi: Mediatrade trial, final sentence

Postby Risottia » Thu Aug 01, 2013 8:19 am

The Corte di Cassazione is about to read the final verdict of the Mediatrade sentence. The prosecution is seeking a guilt sentence for former PM and media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi for the charges of tax evasion and fraud, and a sentence of four years imprisonment (which won't be served in jail due to age, it will be house arrest) and a three years of ban from holding office, which means that Berlusconi will lose his current Senator status.

Stay tuned on Risottian News Network, updates will keep flowing.

FINAL UPDATE:
Berlusconi's appeal against guilt sentence has been rejected. Berlusconi confirmed guilty of tax evasion and fraud and sentenced to four years in jail. The accessory sentence of a ban from holding office has been annulled; the Cassazione has ordered the Milan Appeal Court to debate the length of the ban again.

Is this the real final sentence, or will there be more and more appeals so Berlusconi never actually has to serve time?

He'll never have to serve time. For people of his wealth and age, house arrest is the worst that will happen.

There's the remote possibility the Cassazione will order a new appeal trial to be held. But it's actually remote. It will be either guilt or innocence.

What impact would a guilty verdict have on the tenuous coalition government? I read in The Economist that Berlusconi had threatened to blow up the government over petty reasons before.

This seems much more important than the Ariel Castro trial. :palm: Hopefully AJA will actually give me news.

1. Age? What a bullshit excuse.
2. Four years for tax evasion and fraud? You Europeans can be way too lenient on some issues.

If you have maximum sentences like 20 years for 1st degree murder then 4 years for tax evasion seems right. 4 years is a long fucking time.

In my opinion that is way too light. The fact that Berlusconi won't be serving it in prison, as Risottia stated, makes it that much worse. Twenty years for first-degree murder is way too light as well.

1st degree murder would be with premeditation, right? In Italy the maximum sentence for that is 30 years (until some years ago it was life in jail).

Anyway, the courtroom has been opened to the journalists, the judges are expected to pop up in 30 minutes, after a longish delay.

I sent a friend of the court brief urging to court to make Berlusconi the God-King Harem Master of Italy for life.
Venicilian: wow. Jesus hung around with everyone. boys, girls, rich, poor(mostly), sick, healthy, etc. in fact, i bet he even went up to gay people and tried to heal them so they would be straight.

New Kereptica: Since power is changed energy over time, an increase in power would mean, in this case, an increase in energy. As energy is equivalent to mass and the density of the government is static, the volume of the government must increase.

Lately Berlusconi has stated that his party will continue supporting the cabinet.

UPDATE: THE COURT HAS ENTERED AND THE PRESIDENT IS ABOUT TO READ THE SENTENCE.

GUILTY!
Sadly, ban from holding office annulled and sent again to the Milan Appeal Court for further debate. Should take a couple of months.

More in the OP.

shouldn't the ban on holding office be AT LEAST as long as the actual 'prison' sentence?
