Seeing homosexuality as a major offense is a fairly recent thing.

In the 'olden days' of the Roman Empire, homosexuality was a perfectly normal part of life. The only 'taboo' was for a social inferior to be, as they say, the 'fuck-ee' rather than the fucker. Curiously, the Romans viewed cunnilingus as a FAR greater taboo than anal sex with another man. A man's mouth was, after all, a device for interacting with the world, giving orders and asserting his dominance. The idea of using it to pleasure a woman was abominable.

Even into the 18th and 19th century, homosexuality was a fairly common trend among the nobility of Europe. They just tended to practice it in private. The Russian court was particularly famous for its pansexual courtiers, as I recall. That sort of thing tended to give the more conservative tsars a great deal of stress.

And then came Christianity. :\

Early Christians don't really seem to have cared much about that sort of thing. They were down on sex in general, to be sure, and prostitution in particular, but the concept of homosexuality as a 'disease' or 'disorder' worthy of medical treatment (outside of general sexual excess, which has ALWAYS been seen as a problem) seems to have originated in the 19th century. And didn't really gain popularity until the early 20th century, as I recall.
