Alcohol thread

Postby Yorkopolis » Wed Jul 31, 2013 12:04 pm

Hello, fellow users and useresses,

This thread's for people who drink alcohol, as well as discussion about alcohol. In this thread you can say what kind of alcohol you like most, if you make mixes or not, wether or not you think it's a social problem, why you do(n't) drink, etc. Basically, it's an alcohol thread!

I'd like to ask you all to stay polite, calm, and not to flame people who use alcohol.

Personally, I like rum and vodka, and usually mix rum with cola (AKA Cuba Libre) and vodka with orange juice. I don't drink much beer or wine, as I consider these two too bitter for my own tastes, though when offered a Radler - Beer with citron juice - I'd accept it, because it tastes sweet rather than bitter.
So what about you guys? Do you drink, or not? Why, or why not? Do you drink mixes or do you drink straight out of the bottle? All those and more, just discuss alcohol, what alcoholic drinks you like, why you like it, how you like it, etc.

I drink socially and prefer spirits and cider. All types of whiskey are fine, though JD is probably my favourite. G&Ts are splendid, as are cocktails containing gin. Not a big wine or beer drinker, though I will drink when offered. No complaints with vodka or most liqueurs. Though I'm not actually a big fan of rum's taste.

Btw York my favourite vodka mixer is pineapple.

What, no option for cider?

Am I expected to vote for that under "beer"?

Alcohol is a recreational drug, and it's a bad drug, and surely consumers will replace it with a better drug if given a range of choices.

I used to be quite a teetotalist, but one could say that I've done a complete U-turn. Reading my old teetotaller messages really makes me cringe :p But I guess it was just peer pressure that really drove me into starting drinking, and I don't think it was a bad thing. I would've missed out on so many things if I had remained a teetotaller.

Anyway, my personal favorite alcoholic drink is Gin Long Drink or lonkero, a Finnish mild alcoholic beverage that kinda tastes like grapefruit. Some ciders are nice as well, but over here ciders are considered "women's drinks" so don't drink them too often. Rum cola is a close second, though most people here can't really mix it right.

In the other end of the spectrum are beers (I never understood how anyone could like it, it tastes like liquid bread to me) and all kinds of overly sweet chocolate/cocoa/hazelnut liquors and all cocktails that contain them.

Impeach peach liqueur. Expensive to buy, nasty to drink, and sticky on your tuxedo if you can't hold it down. Impeach I say!

I've known more than a few to do the same thing. Maybe the next change will be your politics? ;)

Cider is becoming like that over here too. Originally they were a genteel man's drink, but since the government raised taxes on alcopops, sickly sweet sugary lolly water with a skerrick of alcohol which I hate, many women, especially young women are turning to cider, surprise, surprise, for its palatibility.

In the other end of the spectrum are beers (I never understood how anyone could like it, it tastes like liquid bread to me) and all kinds of overly sweet chocolate/cocoa/hazelnut liquors and all cocktails that contain them.

Beer is yuck.

Heh.

You ought to try scrumpy, then.

Especially the farm-made stuff.

Plus, dry ciders (my preferred sort) isn't sweet.

Will do. I go for both sweet and dry. Depends which is on sale.

To be fair though, I'm happy cider's being enjoyed by a wider amount of people. And this way, if I offer a lass a sip of my drink she's more likely to say yes. Even if I cop a bit of flak from the lads.

Non-drinker here.

I can't get my self to like the taste of it, add to that the fact makes me feel sick.

It's a shame. I don't mind those that do drink though, assuming they don't get drunk. I have a very low tolerance for drunk people. ;)

I drink alcohol sometimes, but rather rarely. I barely ever drink it at parties and only really opt for it when there's no real other choice. Don't exactly like the bitter taste that comes with alcohol.

I don't much mind people who drink, though.

I'm going to have to third you there. I've never been able to afford Bombay though. The bottle above my bench at the moment is a $26 bottle of French gin.

Scrumpy, my Grandfather used to get that in bottles from farmhouses in the West Country...and then grossly underestimate its potency.
