I'd go with either French or German. Both can be quite useful, especially with travel within the EU or the Middle East and Africa.

French,

French is epic. No, if, ands, or butts about it. For every American who says we saved France in World War 1 (we did) and World War 2 (we barely did), there's another dumbass that completely ignores their service to us (viva Napoleon!) in the Revolution and 1812.

While the French really helped us in the Revolutionary War, there are two problems with this.

A. Napoleon did not do much of anything for us, and the Louisiana sale was an act merely out of convenience to finance the war with Britain. Had Napoleon won and kept the territory, he would have used it as a springboard for invasion.
B. France did very little during the War of 1812 to help America, and even if they were official allies, Napoleon was notorious for treating his allies and vassals like absolute shit. Especially Spain and Italy.

A lot of people have been saying German because it is economically powerful, but if you start learning a language only for its business usefulness it is far to keep the interest up to actually learn it all the way. I'd say that you should learn the language that you have the most passion for.

Well i never heard of France helping during 1812. But french people did help specifically Jean Lafitte and New Orleans (and surrounding areas) natives.

I'm interested in the hole Zollerhern (serious SP?) economic community they had and how it helped to meld together North Germany into a more solid union (also interested in how the iron ore-smelting-coal-steel-railway-banking vertical businesses helped Germany, but in places like Central America where the exports had less backward and forward linkages these served to make banks the captives of their Coffee-owning depositors) starting in the 1820s (1810s????). This is mainly because, 1. Germany has, imo, some of the best politik-war philosophy, 2. Germany is freaking awesome, 3. Germany is pretty close to English and from the limited contact I've seen it's not really all that difficult and the cases are simple, and 4. I want to more closely study the old information on how the Free Trade Zone (horrible spelling of Zollerhern w/e) bonded the independent peoples, and how the same could be accomplish from Guatemala to Costa Rica.

I want to learn German or Russian though in university, and also maybe relearn the Spanish that I forgot from highschool. German and Russian are like two of the most masculine sounding languages that I know of, but then again I'm also interested in Korean, etc.

In terms of applicable practicality (Like how useful it would be in a job where you will be interacting with foreign clients/environments), I'd say Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and other widely-spoken languages would help.

I don't think I could ever be equally fluent in another language like I am with English unless I either A. Kept trying to make being fluent in another language a daily part of my life, or B. Move to a non-Anglophone nation.
