Third Language Woes

Postby Firmador » Wed Jul 31, 2013 7:32 am

So I've been learning Spanish for a couple of years now, nothing really all too good but my reading is okay (a lot of inference, but deduction is p. easy) and I went on this English-Spanish chatboard, only had to translate one word. Reading a couple more books, but most of the basic grammar I've already review like a hundred time. Have a 500 verb list I need to memorize (and 2 more books to finish) but after that I honestly feel like all I need is to go to a Spanish-speaking country for a month or two and I'll be set on the language (could go to a cousin's too, but where's the fun in that?)

I'm trying to pick on a third though, here are the candidates and why (if anyone has any strong position for Russian, I'm all ears but from what I've heard it's bloody rough to learn):
German,

I'm interested in the hole Zollerhern (serious SP?) economic community they had and how it helped to meld together North Germany into a more solid union (also interested in how the iron ore-smelting-coal-steel-railway-banking vertical businesses helped Germany, but in places like Central America where the exports had less backward and forward linkages these served to make banks the captives of their Coffee-owning depositors) starting in the 1820s (1810s????). This is mainly because, 1. Germany has, imo, some of the best politik-war philosophy, 2. Germany is freaking awesome, 3. Germany is pretty close to English and from the limited contact I've seen it's not really all that difficult and the cases are simple, and 4. I want to more closely study the old information on how the Free Trade Zone (horrible spelling of Zollerhern w/e) bonded the independent peoples, and how the same could be accomplish from Guatemala to Costa Rica.

French,

French is epic. No, if, ands, or butts about it. For every American who says we saved France in World War 1 (we did) and World War 2 (we barely did), there's another dumbass that completely ignores their service to us (viva Napoleon!) in the Revolution and 1812.
1. French is sexy, French bitches are sexy. 2. I really like Canada, I mean this has nothing really to do with the French, just that it's spoken in one break-away wanting region. And, well, the Canuks don't like the French-Canuks anyways. 3. I mean it really just comes down to how mellifluous the language and rich the history is..., 4. Also, not so difficult from what I've seen but others have stated its pretty rough (pedantic Grammatical rules aren't bad for me, I have a pretty good memory)

Swedish,

I had a fiegning interest in moving to Sweden. Quick note, I forgot the name, I think it's called Kafi or something, but like the British have tea-time the Swedes have COFFEE-TIME. And I love Coffee. Love it. Sweden also has, along with Russia (and Scandinavia) and average breast size larger than D. Which is like, omfg, lovely. They, however, do not have C&C (concealed and carry) laws which is a GARGANTUAN bummer. And yea, I just like Sweden because of how the gov'ts run and I want to do some research on anti-corruption practices (Singapore would probably be better, but damn Sweden is lovely) Plus I like the Cold, a lot. And white women. And Blond hair.

Russia,

I just love the women. And, I think the agricultural industry over there is ripe for the taking, very fertile and unused land. Needs to be sold to the private sector (and I'm a Socialist!)

---

The biggest benefit, as far as I'm aware (and please DO correct me if I'm wrong), is that being a citizen of any of the EU-members means I can more easily move within Europe. That'd be fantastic.

Thoughts?

don't learn a language based on women and tits.
ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

Because If I were to move in a nation, that would probably be Germany.

French requires an extremely good pronounciation, which is why I hate it.

Russian has a completely different alphabet than the Spanish/english.

And I would only learn Swedish if I wanted to move there.

Although your motivational letter is very interesting, exspecially for whatever concerns Swedish, I'll pick German. In my country everyone learns english from elementary school on, but when competing against someone else with your same qualification, knowing a second foreign language can make you win, and German wins over French. It is a matter of taste, but I'll go with German.

On secon thought here is a top four of prioritues, because why not learning all of them?

1 - German
2 - Russian (Outer space primary language)
3 - French
4 - Swedish (probably a nice language to speak, but Sweden is so international I could go there speaking my mother toungue and find someone who answer me)

Italian is a dirty language. One it's too much like Spanish to be interesting, two why would I want to have the language of knuckle-draggers?

1. French, because it's one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Also since it's a Romance language, and you know Spanish, it'll probably be easier.
2. German. English is a Germanic language, and there are still quite a lot of words in common between German and English. Ja?
3. Russia. Because Vodka, AKs, bears... and it's one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, especially as others have pointed out in space for Earthlings. And with Russia's economic growth, it might help. Finally, because then you'll be able to speak a language from each of the three major language groups present in Europe, making your life much easier. (Germanic-English, Romance-Spanish, Slavic-Russian. Next up-Hungarian, Hebrew, Greek)
4. Swedish. Viking language, but outside of Sweden and a bit of Finland, there's not much practical use of it.

And you're right, they do speak English ubiquitously in Sweden. It's just... coffee culture is so attractive.

I guess I should pick German, but French is so lovely :'(.

Don't run your life by quotes. It's not a good idea.

As for a language, you should learn an African click language. That, or Arabic.

Really it is? I did not know that.

I mean, imagine how sexy it would be for some girl you're talking to to burst out in French? I'd imagine the converse (woman on the receiving end) would be just as attractive, and frankly its so picturesque in my mind (plus I want to talk with the people of Haussman's Paris) it's almost irresistible. But the German has a lot of practical sense.

Viz a viz, German or French is more useful in the businesses?

Well, half of Africa uses French... And most of it is still open to foreign investment. The other half... English will get you through most of it, except for Arabic up North.

I know a lot of people that can't remember a single quote outside jokes, so I'd rather run it on quotes than be completely ignorant of them.

It may sound racist, but I have absolutely no interest in Africa. At all.

Dictionary. All Dictionary and a little bit of interest with the suddenly-awesome-just-add-Nazis language got me do it.

The same motivation applied for the Russians got me able to decipher 75% of the Cyrillic alphabet on my own.
